On Tuesday, January 30, 2007, Wert Payne,66, of Louisa, Virginia entered into eternal rest at the University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville, Virginia. The son of the late Wert Payne,Sr.,and Lucy Alice Herndon Payne, he was born in Goochland, Virginia on April 28, 1940. Wert received his education from Goochland County Public Schools. At a very early age, Wert joined County Line Baptist Church where he received great pleasure in singing God's praises. He was the president of the combined choir, treasurer of the Men's Chorus as well as a member of the Evangelistic Chorus. In the 1980's, Wert founded and owned the Payne's Taxi Service, where he worked until his illness. He loved his job and people that he transported loved him. Wert was a true missionary for God. He was not only a transporter for the sick, he was a companion and friend to all that he served. He leaves to cherish his memory, a loving and devoted wife of 48 years, Laura Payne; three sons Ronald, Gary and Kenneth Payne of Louisa, Virginia; five grandchildren, Lamar, Marcus, Corey, Shante Payne and Master of Arms, U.S. Navy, Tina McCrae; two great grandchildren Sayvion and Samyia Turner; one sister, Loretta Hayden of Staunton, Virginia; one daughter-in-law, Cynthia Payne; foster brother, James Arnett; four sisters-in-law, Cornelia Payne Brooks, Edna Clark, Lucy Payne and Brenda Hayden; five brothers-in-law, Willie Hayden, Lawrence Clark, Roderick Willis, Harry Brooks, and Norman Hicks; a devoted cousin and special friend Horace Bruce, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 4, 2007 at 2:00 PM at County Line Baptist Church with the Rev. Walter H. Jones, Sr. Pastor officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
