Wayne Keith Johnson, Sergeant First Class Retired (US Army), the first son of the late Hubert
Ogden and Lillian Viola Johnson of Buckingham, County Virginia was born on September 25,
1951 in Fluvanna County, Virginia. He accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age
and was baptized at the Thessalonia Baptist Church, in Fluvanna County Virginia in 1963.
Wayne was educated in the Buckingham County School system graduating from the Cater G.
Woodson High School in 1969 where he excelled in academics, football (center & defensive
end) and track (discus, one & two mile events). After graduating from high school he enrolled in
Saint Paul's College, Lawrenceville, Virginia on a partial foot ball scholarship to study
elementary education.
Wayne worked for a number of years at the Scottsville Uniroyal Plant, Scottsville Virginia in
various positions before enlisting in the United States Army in August of 1974 where he served
as a Motor Transport Operator in Germany, Southwest Asia (Operation Desert Storm), Texas,
and as a US Army Gold Badge Recruiter for Milwaukee and Green Bay Wisconsin before
retiring after 20 years of active service.
Wayne will forever be remembered for his love for family, a gigantic Love for his mother, his
pride in having served his country especially in a time of war, his voracious love for reading,
especially Westerns and comic books, his love and skill in freshwater fishing and boating and his
excellent culinary skills. Wayne could really cook an awesome steak! He and mom often
compared recipes and discussed the pros and cons of different seasonings. His contagious sense
of humor will forever cling to the memories of those he touched and loved.
Wayne leaves to cherish his memory one brother, Rev. Dr. Terry O. Johnson (Julie) of
Richmond, William A. Johnson (deceased) three sisters: Jacqueline Newton (Robby) of
Arvonia, VA, Pamela Harris (Anthony), Fluvanna, VA, Colonel (R) Janice M. Johnson (US
Army), Ramona Hawkins (James), LaPlata, MD. and Sandra Hutcherson (Thomas), aunts;
Gladys Edmonds, Fluvanna, VA, Louise Franklin and Augustine Thompson of Bronx, NY,
uncle; Stanley Jackson, Fluvanna, a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins,
friends and a devoted friend; Kathy BUDLls,of Manitowoc, Wisconsin.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, February 9, 2012 at Baptist Union Baptist Church 125 Baptist Union Road Dillwyn, VA 23936 with the Rev. Ken Albright, officiating and Rev. Dr. Terry O. Johnson, eulogist. Burial with full military honors will follow in the church cemetery
