Verna Mae Poindexter Comfort departed this life on Wednesday, January 9, 2013, at the Louisa Health & Rehabilitation Center in Louisa, VA.
Verna Mae was born July 20, 1928, in Edwight, West Virginia, to the late Alexander and Susie Scott Poindexter. In 1932, the family moved to Louisa, Virginia where Verna attended school and graduated from the Louisa Training School.
In 1947, Verna Mae was united in holy matrimony to the late Wilson Preston Comfort, Sr. of Spotsylvania, VA. Verna Mae and Wilson were the proud parents of five children.
Verna Mae joined the Jerusalem Baptist Church at an early age and remained a faithful disciple until her health began to decline.
Verna Mae was loved by all who knew her. She was well-known for her baking skills and for the many sweet potato and coconut pies she made for her church, community, family and friends. She was a long time dedicated member of TOPS (Take off Pounds Sensibly) and received numerous achievement awards.
Along with her parents, Verna Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Wilson Comfort, Sr.; daughter, Ruth Anna Gray; brothers, Joseph, Harry, Roosevelt, Calvin and Herbert Lee Poindexter and sisters, Florean Anderson and Marion Poindexter.
She leaves to cherish her memory, three sons, Wilson, Jr. (Rosalyn) of Raleigh, NC, James (Sandra) and Maurice of Mineral, VA; one daughter, Shirley Moore of Baltimore, MD; one sister, Ruth Nelson of Baltimore, MD; one brother, James Poindexter of Mineral, VA; three brothers-n-law, Amon Comfort of Mineral, Alfred Anderson of Spotsylvania and George Nelson of Baltimore, MD; six sisters-n-law, Ruth (Lee) Richardson of Louisa, VA, Dora Comfort of Mineral, VA, Jean Squire of Durham, NC, Ellen Johnson of Willingboro, NJ, Jeralean Comfort of Mineral, VA and Vivian Comfort of Mineral; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Monday, January 14, 2013 at St. John Baptist Church in Mineral, VA with the Reverend Virginia Farmer officiating; Elder Wilson P. Comfort Jr. eulogist. Burial with committal will follow in the Poindexter Family Cemetery.
