Vergie McKinley Shelton, Sr. son of the late Charlie O. and Emma L. Shelton was born March 15, 1934. God called him home on Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at 7:00 P.M. He was preceded in death by his son, Conrad Shelton, his grandson, Dustin Shelton, his siblings: Catherine Shelton, Shirley Smith, Oscar, Clarence, Woodrow and Joseph Shelton.

Vergie joined Ebenezer Baptist Church at an early age. He was baptized under the leadership of the late Reverend R. J. Robertson. A faithful member, Vergie served as a Trustee, a Deacon and a member of both the Male Chorus and the Sanctuary Choir. He also attended Sunday School regularly. Vergie attended schools in Louisa County and in Washington, D.C. He later returned home and married his prior school mate, Eva Harris. They were married on May 13, 1952 and to this union they had nine children. Vergie was a provider for his family. He worked several jobs during his lifetime: Purcell Lumber Company, Tyson Foods, Self- employed (logging) and for Rigid Products.

He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 66 years, Eva Shelton and their children: Vergie Shelton, Jr., of Austin, Texas, Cherita Bates, Brenda Thompson, Alice Payne, Deacon Eva Payne (Norman), Susan Derricott, (Dennis),  Deacon Wayne Shelton (Reverend Geraldine) and Gerard Shelton all from Louisa, Virginia. He also leaves 17 grandchildren, 17 great- grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

He also leaves his siblings: Charlie Shelton, Jr. (Gertrude), Henry Shelton, David Shelton(Emma), Joyce Johnson (Anthony), and Arlean Shelton all of Richmond, Virginia; Oneida Taylor (Henry) of Chesterfield, Virginia; George Shelton, Doris Tomes, Emma Shelton (Tim) of Louisa, Virginia; Sarah Smith (Meredith) and Louise Langhorne (Walter) of Goochland, Virginia. He also leaves four sisters-in-law: Joslyn Shelton, Nan Johnson, Marion Harris, Connie Harris and a brother-in-law, Thomas Harris; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
