Willie Tina Perkins Roots departed this life early Sunday, October 4, 2009 in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Born March 4, 1925 in Louisa, she was the 10th of 11 children born to the late Robert Martin and Carrie Burruss Perkins.

She was baptized at First Baptist Church, Louisa, at the age of five, during the pastorate of Reverend B. D. Ellis. She remained active at First Baptist throughout her life, serving as a Deaconess, Sunday School teacher, director of the Vacation Bible School, member of the Senior Choir, member of the Missionary Circle, and founding President of the Pulpit Aid Society. Tina also was active with the Louisa County Sunday School Union and served as Head of Christian Education for the Mattaponi Baptist Convention.

She received her early education in Louisa County, and graduated from the Louisa Training School in 1943. She entered St. Paul's College, Lawrenceville, Virginia, where she received a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1948.

Tina first began teaching at the Mechanicsville School in Louisa County after her graduation. She taught in several schools in Louisa, and also in King William County. In 1969, Tina moved to Mineral Elementary, becoming one of the first African-American teachers in a formerly all-white public school. She maintained membership in the Virginia Education Association, the National Education Association, and various local education associations. Additionally, Tina helped form the local food pantry, volunteered with the Alliance of Black Churches, served with the Volunteers of Louisa, was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a life member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Tina is survived by her son Keith D. Roots (Ashleigh), and four grandchildren, Benjamin, Grant, Grace, and Kate. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 27 years, Samuel, and by an infant daughter who died in 1964. She is also survived by one brother, Richard Perkins (Evelyn); one sister-in-law, Mary Perkins; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 8, 1 p.m., at the First Baptist Church, 102 Meadow Avenue, Louisa. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 32, Louisa, VA 23093.
