Thelma Lee Jackson , affectionately known to many as "Cootney" departed her earthly journey and entered eternal rest on July 1, 2024. The youngest of 6 children born to Dennis Jackson and Viola Brice Jackson, Cootney made her earthly appearance on April 3, 1935.
This young lady received her elementary education at the neighborhood "Hollywood School", which was located near where she lived. There's a saying, "If you want to have a friend you must first be one". Thelma put that statement into action during her elementary years. She may not have had a lot of friends during that time, however those that she had were genuine. Thelma often had friends over to spend a night or weekend at her home.
Following her graduation from Hollywood, Thelma attended S. C. Abrams High School where she proved to be a caring, sympathetic person. She had a classmate whose parents did not have the necessary funds to supply her with books. Thelma would loan her books to that student so she could get her schoolwork done.
Cootney accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Byrd Grove Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. S. C. Abrams. There she grew up and took on various responsibilities as a member. She served on the usher board, a member of the missionary circle, sang with the gospel chorus and served as a member of the hospitality committee. Thelma also sang with a community group organized by Mrs. Ethel White and composed of members from various churches of Fluvanna and Louisa Counties.
Cooking was her specialty. Once she catered an event at Byrd Grove that was so successful that someone remarked afterwards, "we should get her to do this all the time".
Most of Thelma's work experience was done at hospitals and nursing facilities where she delighted in cooking and where those who were recipients delighted in eating what she cooked. She rendered special talent at the Towers Nursing Facility and Martha Jefferson Hospital, where she won "Employee of the Month", where one of her co-workers said, "everyone loves her cooking". She also worked at Winter Haven Nursing facility and retired from Martha Jefferson Hospital in 2000 at the age of 65.
Thelma was proceeded in death by her parents Dennis and Viola Jackson, sisters Christine Winston, Margaret Bruce, Evelyn Jackson and Helen Hubert and brother Gilbert Jackson.
She leaves to cherish her memory her loving son Stacey (Lisa) and darling grandson Devin (Parshae) and a devoted nephew Gregory Winston (Cheryl). Along with a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
To the Jackson family, we at D. D. Watson offer our most sincere sympathy and condolences. Our prayer continues to be that your abiding faith in God will lend to you a measure of comfort that will strengthen and sustain you during your time of sorrow.
