Susie Poindexter Quarles entered into eternal rest on December 29, 2014, at Martha Jefferson Hospital, Charlottesville, Virginia.
Susie was the third of eight children born to the late Alexander and Martha Fortune Poindexter, on April 30, 1919, in Louisa, Virginia.
Susie was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip C. Quarles; two brothers, Joseph Poindexter and Alexander Poindexter Jr.; four sisters, Beatrice Poindexter, Laura Collins, Inez Perkins, and Elizabeth Lee.
Susie accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior at an early age. She was baptized and joined First Baptist Church of Louisa under the direction of Pastor B.D. Ellis.
Susie graduated from the Louisa County Training School and then left Louisa County to work in Washington, D.C. for many years. In 1947, she was united in matrimony to Phillip C .Quarles. Upon her return to Louisa, Virginia, she was the co-owner of Poindexter Store. She was a caregiver for people within the community of Louisa for many years. When the love of her life, Phillip, became ill, her attention and efforts were devoted to taking care of him.
Susie enjoyed gardening, sitting on the porch, cooking, looking out the window, watching The Price is Right, Family Feud, Wheel of Fortune , and of course the Washington Wizards, as well as working crossword puzzles. She enjoyed riding with her son, Douglas, and granddaughter, Shelly, as well as calling to inquire where everyone was located.
Susie will be truly missed by everyone and will be remembered as a woman who valued her family.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory: four sons, Phillip "Edward" (Brenda), Robert "Buck" (Erma), Richard Douglas, and Donald Lee (Pamela) all of Louisa, VA; one sister, Mary Hughes of Woodbridge, VA; one godson, John R. Epps of Louisa, VA; ten grandchildren, Tamara, Robert "Rocky", Hope, Richetta "Shelly", Rhonda, LaQuinta "Miki", Richard, Bridget, Dominique, and Diamond "Ciera"; nineteen great grandchildren, and six great great grandchildren; several devoted friends and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family members and friends.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, January 3, 2015 at Thomasson Watson Funeral Chapel, with the Reverend Bruce Jones officiating. Interment will follow in the Poindexter Family Cemetery.
