Susan Covell Jones Barnes was born to the late Charles M. Jones, Sr., and Jean Finley Jones on November 9, 1960, in Winchester, Virginia. Susan was also predeceased by her brother, Floyd Lindsey Jones, and grandparents, Nancy Green Finley and Floyd R. Finley II.
On the morning of June 8, 2025, angels entered her room at the University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville, VA, and received Susan as she began her journey to her eternal home.

Susan was a 1979 graduate of John Handley High School in Winchester, Virginia, and a 1993 graduate of Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia. Susan began her professional career with Louisa County Public Schools in 1997, initially teaching in the Alternative Education programs and later transitioning to the history department at Louisa County High School, where she taught for 27 years.

As a lifelong supporter of Black history and education, Susan was a founding sponsor of Destined Daughters, a Black student advocacy group. Susan was also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Eta Phi Omega Chapter, since 2005, where she previously held positions such as Financial Secretary, Vice President, Risk Management Chair, Strategic Planning Chair, and Vendor Coordinator for the 2024 Northern Western Virginia Cluster.

Susan was married to Fitzgerald Barnes on August 8, 1992. God blessed their marital union with one child: Gabriella Lindsey Barnes (her mom's best friend and the apple of her eye). Susan accepted Christ as her personal Savior, was baptized, and joined the Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Winchester, Virginia, at an early age.

She will be cherished and remembered by her spouse, Fitzgerald Barnes; her daughter, Gabriella; and her siblings: Charles M. Jones, Jr. (Sharon) of Newark, Delaware; Linda Sarabia Jones (Jenny) of South Beloit, Illinois; and Patrick Jones of Winchester. A special cousin: Sheila Carter (Phil). Her aunts: Gloria Dendy Johnson of Delaware and Juanita Finley of Clarke County, Virginia: her mother-in-law: Lillie Barnes; sisters-in-law: Cassini Rose Jordan (Wayne) and Jessie Barnes-Blow; nieces: Tiffany Jones, Felecia Artis (Bernard) and Shernae Earls; nephew: Deonte Earls; great-niece: Auria Earls; and a host of other relatives and friends.

To the Barnes family, we at D. D. Watson offer our most sincere sympathy and condolences. Our prayer continues to be that your abiding faith in God will lend to you a measure of comfort that will strengthen and sustain you during your time of sorrow.

It is during such times as these that we draw upon our faith, stand upon our scriptures and rely upon our God. There is no question that in this and through this, God will keep you, comfort you and sustain you. You and your family are forever in our prayers.
