Sarah Ann Tyree Hairston (Peanut) was born on July 17, 1938 to the late Samuel F. and
Lula Mae Tyree in Washington, D. C. She was the fourth oldest of five children. She was
educated within the Washington D. C. School District where she graduated from Dunbar High
School in 1957. Soon after graduating, Sarah obtained licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
She retired after 25 years of working at D. C. General Hospital to return to her childhood home in
Cuckoo, Virginia. She was an active member and deaconess at Jerusalem Baptist Church.
Preceded in death by her oldest daughter, Sharon, Sarah is survived by her husband of 50
years James M. Hairston, Sr; her son, James Hairston, II, and his wife, Michelle; daughter
Stacey and her husband, Greg; 9 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren; twin sister Alice Mines
and a host of nieces, nephews and close family friends.
The family will receive friends on Monday, September 17, 2007 from 7-8 p.m. in the
Thomasson Watson Funeral Chapel, Louisa, Virginia. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on
Tuesday, September 18, 2007 at Philippi Christian Church, 7133 Jefferson Highway, Mineral,
Virginia. With the Reverend Virginia Farmer officiating. Interment will follow in the Jerusalem
Baptist Church Cemetery, 608 Mansfield Road, Louisa, Virginia.
