Ruth Evelyn Carter, a beacon of faith, ambition, and resilience, was called to her eternal home on December 23, 2023. Born on December 10, 1930, in Orange, VA, Ruth Evelyn's journey was marked by a generous spirit and unwavering resilience that she carried throughout her life.
Ruth Evelyn began her journey in the working world as an Operator with Bell Atlantic Telephone Company, where her ambitious nature quickly shone through. Her dedication took her from Long Island, NY, to Washington, DC, where she continued her work with the company, later known as Verizon. Ruth Evelyn's commitment to excellence was not confined to her professional life; she was an avid antiquarian and thrift store shopper, known for her keen eye for a bargain. Whether it was baking her famous brownies and lasagna, tending to home projects, or ensuring tasks were done the right way - her way, Ruth Evelyn's dedication and generosity were ever-present.
Ruth Evelyn's love for the Lord was a cornerstone of her life. She was a devoted Baptist, treasuring the fellowship and the joy of singing. Her faith was reflected in her love for family, especially her nieces and nephews, who were her pride and joy. Ruth Evelyn found solace in returning to the family farm, her happy place, and her faith was further nurtured through the special kinship she developed with her chosen family - Juanita, John Graham, Denise (Garvin), and her special buddy, Zoe.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mattie Carter, and siblings Alphonso, Marjorie, Warren, Roy, Anna, John, Fayetta, Joseph, Bettye, and Virginia. She is survived by her sister Mamie Harper, sister-in-love Anna Carter, sister-in-love Betty Ann Carter, and a host of nieces, nephews, and family members.
As we honor her life, we remember the words of the Bible that Ruth Evelyn lived by, "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you." (Deuteronomy 31:6)
Ruth Evelyn's legacy will forever be etched in the hearts of those she touched with her kind heart, sharp wit, strong faith, and resilient spirit. We invite you to share your memories and photos of Ruth Evelyn on her memorial page, as we collectively remember and celebrate her life.
