On Thursday, May 29, 2025, God closed the eyes of our beloved mother, Rose Marie Shelton , as she departed this earthly life at her home and went home to take up residence in her eternal home. Although our hearts are saddened and heavy, we concur that God only takes the best.
Rose , affectionately known as "Ree" , was born on September 14, 1940, the only child born to the matrimonial union of the late Emmett and Petrella Anthony Jackson. She also shared her life with the Russell family, as her aunt, the late Mrs. Viola Russell, was instrumental in her up-bringing. Ree was married to the late Lewis Shelton, Sr. and God blessed their union with seven children; one: Doriane Yancey (Jack) preceded her in death.
During the pastoral reign of the late Reverend John Tyler, Rose accepted Christ as her Savior, was baptized, and joined with the membership of the Rising Sun Baptist Church. After receiving her formal education at A.G. Richardson High School, Ree went on to become skilled as a seamstress, quilter, and cook. (her apple cobbler always made you want more). She was a skilled hair stylist and loved to shop. She was employed with Louisa Manufacturing until they closed.
Rose leaves to cherish her memories; her children: Lewis Shelton, Jr., Christine Shelton (Benny), Roger Shelton (Patricia), Allen Shelton, Gail Lemon, and James Shelton; her second family – the Russell children; sisters-in-law: Dorothy Hunter, Louise Butler-Lee and Mary Alsop (Roger); brothers-in-law: Raymond Shelton and Lionel Wood; an aunt: Eva Anthony of Maidens, VA; eight devoted grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister friends: Grace Shelton, Nellie White, Lucille Pryor, Louise Langhorne, Margaret Houchens, and Della Carter; devoted neighbors: Robert and Melba Jones; caring friend: Linda Robinson and a great host of other relatives and friends.
To the Shelton family, we at D. D. Watson offer our most sincere sympathy and condolences. Our prayer continues to be that your abiding faith in God will lend to you a measure of comfort that will strengthen and sustain you during your time of sorrow.
It is during such times as these that we draw upon our faith, stand upon our scriptures and rely upon our God. There is no question that in this and through this, God will keep you, comfort you and sustain you. You and your family are forever in our prayers.
