Roger Thomas Graves was born to the late Clarence Lee Graves and Elnora Yancey Graves, in Washington, DC on April 10, 1959. He was their tenth child and their sixth son. In all they completed their family with 12 children and resided in Bumpass, VA.
Roger was lovingly known by his nickname "Mookie" which was given to him at an early age. He joined Mt. Garland Baptist Church at the age of 12, following his older brothers' and sisters' lead. He obtained his education attending schools in the Louisa County Public School System. As a young adult, Roger took residence in Richmond, VA. He was trained and skilled in construction and culinary arts and held positions in both fields throughout his career. He had a long tenure at the Marriott and some popular restaurants in Richmond like Moore Street Cafe. He loved to cook, but grilling was his specialty. Roger married Georgette Brockington in the mid 80's and they resided in Richmond but are currently estranged.
Roger departed this life on April 12, 2020 while hospitalized at the VCU Medical Center in Richmond, VA. He was such a loving person with a kind spirit. He will be dearly missed by his family, loved ones and friends.
He is preceded in death by his brothers, Gene Graves, Twin brothers Melvin and Kelvin Graves and his parents listed above.
Roger leaves his family to celebrate his life: daughter, LaTasha Traynham (Travis); granddaughter, Ameerah (aka Mimi); 8 siblings, Joanne Carr, Shirley Thornton, Clarence Graves, Norman Graves (Gwen), Paula Jackson, Stephany Gist, Sterling Graves and David Graves (Pauline). He also leaves his aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and a host of cousins and family friends.
