Richard "High Pocket" Ellis, Sr.,of Spotsylvania County, born February 8,1928, passed on to glory Thursday, February 8, 2007. He was the third son of the late Matt Ellis and Angie Bell Lewis Ellis. In addition to his parents, Richard was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Hattie Burley Ellis, his son, Richard Ellis, Jr., three sisters and two brothers. He is survived by one son, Ron L. Ellis and his wife, Sally, of Mesa, Ariz.; two daughters, Jackie Ellis Syrkes and her husband, Nathan, of Louisa County and Sylvia Ellis Tyree and her husband, Arthur of Spotsylvania; a daughter-in-law, Mary Ellis of Spotsylvania; two sisters, Julia Ellis of Orange County and Mary Cage of Washington, D.C; nine grandsons, seven granddaughters, 16 great-grandsons, 12 great-granddaughters, three sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law, Loretta Coleman, Christine Burley and Bobby Burley, all of Spotsylvania, and Jean Jackson and James Jackson, both of Louisa and many other relatives and friends. Richard was a humble, gentle giant who truly loved his family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 11, 2007 at Shady Grove Baptist Church, 21024 Pineywood Road, Orange, with the Rev. Joseph H. Moore, officiating. Burial will be in Branch Fork Baptist Church Cemetery, Unionville,Va.
