On Monday, March 23, 2016, God sent His angel of love to call our loving father, grandfather, uncle, brother-in-law and friend home. Phillip Lewis Mickens, Sr., the son of the late Roderick Motee Mickens and the late Jenny Anderson Mickens, was born on August 16, 1935.
Phillip joined the Rising Sun Baptist Church at an early age. On August 31, 1952, he was joined in holy matrimony to Isabell Shelton. God blessed this union with eight children.
Phillip retired from Dominion VA Power. Before his health declined, he loved spending time fishing and playing dominos with his long-time friend, Fleming Shelton, Jr. He also loved playing card games with his brothers-in-law and other family members and friends. He is remembered for being, at times, quiet and always stoic and strong.
In addition to his parents, Phillip was preceded in death by his wife, Isabell Mickens, of 46 years of marriage and son, Michael Mickens. He was also preceded in death by his five brothers: Cornelius, Archie, Earl, and Roderick Mickens and Sam Hunter; and eight sisters: Zettie Jordan, Hattie Jenkins, Laura Harris, Hazel Mickens, Ruth Johnson, Bernice Stanley, Gladys Davis, and Elsie West. He was also preceded in death by his faithful friend, George Hunter (Meg).
Phillip leaves to cherish his memories, four sons: Phillip Jr., Russell, Gary, and Robert Mickens (Faye); three daughters, Sandra Comfort (James), Linda Robinson (Steve), and Diane Kenny (Michael); eleven grandchildren: Randall (fiancée Samantha), Terrance and Jamal Robinson, Tracy and James Comfort, Michael Lewis, Brandon Mickens, Brittany and Bria Mickens, Morgan and Michael Kenny, Jr.; five great-grandchildren: Teona Robinson, Jaiden and Josilynn Comfort, Javon Jackson and Diamond Lewis; eight brothers-in-law: Samuel Lewis, George (Fannie), Timothy (Margie), Walter (whom he helped raise), Ray, Larry, Albert, and Gregory Shelton; five sisters-in-law: Clarisa and Clydenia Shelton, Gerleen Sawyer, Katherine Harris (Roy), and Jessie Hayden (Russell); a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Phillip also leaves to cherish his memories a loving and devoted friend, Della Carter.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 28, 2016 at Rising Sun Baptist Church 6829 Fredericks Hall Road Mineral, Va 23117. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
