Norman Bernard Mitchell, Jr. was born December 17, 1939, to the late Norman Mitchell, Sr. and Gertrude Elizabeth Butler Mitchell in Washington D.C. Norman began his journey with the Lord on Friday, December 5, 2025, at University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville, VA. In addition to his parents, Norman is preceded in death by his brothers, Reginald Stone Street and Robert Mitchell; a sister, Vernell Logan, and his son, Bernard.

Norman accepted Christ as his personal Savior and at an early age joined Moriah Baptist Church in Washington, DC; he moved his membership to the Rising Sun Baptist Church on January 5, 1992. He was a member of the Trustee and Usher Ministries, a member of the Men’s Ministry and a member of the Beautification Committee for the new Sanctuary. Additionally, Norman served on the Beautification Committee for the new church sanctuary, and spokesman for the men’s ministry.

Norman was educated in Washington, DC schools. He worked at the National Press Club, Mayflower Hotel, the Pentagon, Arlington, VA for many years and the Federal Reserve System, Washington, DC for 29 years before retiring. He met Alice at the Pentagon in 1964, and they were married July 24, 1971. He was a very good husband. As husband and wife, Norman and Alice were the resident managers at Hertford Terrace Apartments in Washington, DC for fourteen years.

Norman loved talking with people – those he knew and those he didn’t know. He took pleasure in watching old movies, Walker Texas Ranger, In the Heat of the Night, NCIS, Amazing Race, and his favorite football team, the Washington Commanders. He also loved McDonald’s coffee and fried chicken.

He leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Alice Marie Mitchell; his daughters, Barbara and Robin; his brothers, Raymond Mitchell (Arlene), Larry Mitchell, Stanley Mitchell, and Eric Mitchell; his sister, Belinda Paris (Robert); goddaughters, Tia Hunter and Joyce Johnson; five sisters-in-law, three brothers-in law, and a great host of other family members and friends.

To the Mitchell family, we at D. D. Watson offer our most sincere sympathy and condolences. Our prayer continues to be that your abiding faith in God will lend to you a measure of comfort that will strengthen and sustain you during your time of sorrow.

It is during such times as these that we draw upon our faith, stand upon our scriptures, and rely upon our God. There is no question that in this and through this, God will keep you, comfort you, and sustain you. You and your family are forever in our prayers.
