Nannie Ruth Gordon Johnson Bates, the only daughter of six children born to the late Collie and Louise Cook Johnson entered into eternal rest peacefully at her home in Mineral, Virginia on Thursday, January 24, 2019. She was with us for 86 years, born on March 28, 1932 in Cuckoo, Virginia .
At an early age, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior and joined the New Anna Baptist Church , Mineral, Virginia where she served as President of the Usher Board for several years and sang with the Heavenly Echoes. For a long while, she also sang with a group called the West Singers as well as on the Philippi Christian Church Senior Choir for several years.
She was educated in the Louisa County Public School System through the 11th grade.
On December 5, 1953, Nannie was joined in holy matrimony to the late William James Bates of Kents Store, Virginia. To this union, five children were born.
She worked as a homemaker for various families in the Mineral, Virginia area until she retired to take care of her husband during his disability. She was preceded in death by her parents, Collie and Louise Cook Johnson; two daughters, Mary Louise Johnson and Madonna Elizabeth Johnson; four brothers, Harvey, Frank, Leslie, Richard and Chancell Johnson; two sisters-in-law, Melvina Baker Johnson and Joyce White Johnson.
Nannie leaves to cherish her memories her five children; James L. Bates (Joyce) of Louisa, VA, Joyce Whalen and Edith Kitt of Mineral, VA, William Bates (Sonya) of Richmond, VA and Sadie Hughes (Ellis) of Mineral, VA; eight grandchildren; Kimberly (Corey), Everett Jr., Kenisha (Shawn), Brian (Lisa), Derek, Lamar, Morgan and Harrison; and eleven great grandchildren, Corey Jr., Lillyan, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Alyssa, Khloe, Aniya, Makaila, Braeden, Kayden and Aubrey; three sisters-in-law, Sadie Harris Johnson and Shirley Coles Johnson, both of Mineral, VA; Elizabeth Bishop Bates of Tarrytown, New York and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at the New Anna Baptist Church, 11639 Cross County Road, Mineral, Virginia 23117 on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at 1:00 p.m., with Pastor Mark K. Brown eulogist and Pastor Austin G. Bates, officiating. Interment was beside her husband at the County Line Baptist Church Cemetery, Kents Store, Virginia.
