Mattie Holland Hicks entered into eternal rest on Thursday, March 29, 2007, at the University of Virginia Medical Center. She was born March 9, 1934, in Louisa County, Virginia, to the late Thomas W. Holland and Julia Morris Holland. She was a Faithful member of the Galilee Baptist Church, where she served on the floral Committee. She attended church regularly until her health began to fail. Mattie received her education in the public schools of Louisa County, graduating from the Louisa Training School in 1951. After graduating high school, she moved to Montclair, New Jersey. She attended cosmetology school in Newark, New Jersey, and also worked for the RCA, Bendix, and Western Electric Corporations. In June 1962, Mattie was joined in holy matrimony to Wallace G. Hicks in Montclair, New Jersey. The couple moved to New Haven, Connecticut, where in April 1963, they became the proud parents of they only child, a son, Mark A. Hicks. In 1972, she received an Associate of Science degree from South Central Community College in New Haven. Mattie moved to East Orange, New Jersey, where she worked as a social worker for Essex County. In 1973, she began working as a head cashier for King's Supermarket in Montclair, she was later promoted to front end manager, a position she held until she became chronically ill and retired in 1974. Although her health improved from time to time, Mattie bravely suffered from her illness throughout the rest of her life. Being a very independent person and one who always was eager to help others, her illness was apparent only to those close to her. She truly fought a valiant, without complaining, for over 30 years. All who knew an loved her can attest to the fact that she truly was an angel here on earth. She was truly the essence of the nickname she carried throughout her life, "Honey". Loving memories of Mattie will be cherished by her beloved son, Mark A Hicks and his wife, Janice. She was also the beloved grandmother of Mark, Jr. and Justin Hicks; and step-grandmother of Jonvieve Nicole Dunston and Michael Dunn. In addition she is survived by her mother, Julia Morris Holland; five sisters, Janette Kittrell and Ruth Walker of Montclair, New Jersey, Marjorie Fitzgerald of East Orange, New Jersey, and Hossaine Farrar and Blanche Parks of Louisa; five brothers, Leonard Holland of East Orange, Thomas (Julia), Early (Barbara), Phillip (Frances) and Ronnie Holland all of Louisa; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. A family visitation will be held from 7 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at Thomasson Watson Funeral Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 5, 2007, at Galilee Baptist Church 3598 Three Notch Road Ferncliff, Virginia 23053 with the Reverend Otis R. Spellman officiating. Interment will follow in the Holland Family Cemetery.
