It is with profound sorrow and a deep sense of loss that we announce the passing of Matt Emanuel Smith, Sr. , affectionately known as "Pop" to family and friends. Born March 9, 1929, in Louisa, Virginia, Matt lived 95 remarkable years, each one filled with indomitable spirit, enduring love, and an unwavering commitment to family and community. His vibrant life ended on April 27, 2024, leaving a legacy that will continue to inspire generations.
Matt will be remembered as a stalwart pillar of the Louisa community, having spent his entire life in the county. His robust career as a logger spanned many decades until his retirement in 1997. His hardworking nature was a testament to his character, and his vibrant personality made him beloved among his peers. Matt dedicated his life to serving others and leaving an indelible imprint on those fortunate enough to have known him.
Matt was the cherished patriarch of a large and loving family. He is survived by his children, Matt E. Smith Jr (Ann), Erma S. Quarles (Robert), Thelma S. Hayden (Floyd), and Michael W. Smith, Sr (Sheila), fifteen grandchildren; his siblings, Larry Smith, Nora Robinson (Melvin), Ada Whitney (Warren), Jordina Chandler; his sisters-in-law, Margaret Smith and Sarah Smith; his brothers-in-law, Joseph Burruss (Yvonne) and Charles Burruss (Rosetta) and a host of great, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sylvia Smith; his parents, Lloyd Smith and Daisy Barrett; his brothers, Richard Smith Sr., Eugene Smith, Leo Smith, Robert Rucker, Melvin Smith, Al Smith, and Harry Sr; and his sister Annie Robinson.
Even though Matt's presence will be deeply missed, his spirit continues to live on in the hearts and memories of his loved ones. His strength, resilience, and unwavering love have created a legacy that will forever resonate in the community he cherished so much. To celebrate and share in Pop's remarkable life, we encourage friends and family to leave memories and upload photos on his memorial page.
