Listen to Obituary
Mary Minnie Minor Hughes, 87, of Mineral died Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at Martha Jefferson Hospital.

Sunrise:
Life began for Mary Minor Hughes on January 23, 1930 at the home of her now deceased parents, Benjamin and Minnie Minor. Growing up on the family farm, Mary worked the crops alongside her ten brothers and four sisters. Even though nine brothers and two sisters preceded her in death, Mary's life was full of love and devotion for her siblings.

Her Early Life:
Because of her responsibilities to her family, Mary didn't enjoy the privilege of a formal education. However, she was blessed with guidance and direction from her Heavenly Father. On April 18, 1953, at the age of 23, she was joined in marriage to Ellis O. Hughes and they remained a faithful couple for 64 years. She was a lifelong member of New Line Baptist Church.

Her Greatest Accomplishments:
Mary began working outside of her home to help provide for her family. She and Ellis purchased a home on Cross County Road and spent many years enjoying their home. She was proud of her home but it did not compare to the joy she had for her children. Michael, Ellis, Denise and Ricky bought out the light in her eyes. Even though God, in his infinite wisdom, wanted Ricky in heaven at an early age, he remained in Mary's heart until she joined him. She taught her children about hard work and honesty. She made sure that her children knew about the goodness of her God.

Her Legacy:
Mary was blessed with a large extended family. Her home was open to her many nieces and nephews, two of whom lived with her until adulthood. She cared for many of the younger children so their parents could work. No child went lacking for anything if "Aunt Minnie" was around. Her meals were legendary. Not only were they delicious, but she could feed a crowd with her Sunday dinners and she did so with love. Her kind and generous nature was felt throughout her family.

Her later life:
Mary worked and retired from Louisa Manufacturing Company and after many years of dedicated service. She held other jobs for short periods for time. She became a Deaconess at the New Line Baptist Church and served with pride. She was also a member of the Senior Choir. Mary loved her church and was faithful member. Mary's health declined and she was unable to attend service as she once had but she always praised God for continuing to bless her.

Her Family:
Memories will be held in the hearts of her family. She is survived by her husband, Deacon Ellis Hughes, her children, Michael Cooper (Gayle), Ellis (Sadie) and Denise (Tony). Also, surviving are her sisters, Daisy Kinney and Hannah Price; a brother, Deacon Haywood Minor; sisters-in-law, Geraldine Minor, Minister Beulah Minor, and Viola Minor, brothers-in law, Herman Watson and Early Hughes; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; a devoted niece, Pastor Virginia N. Farmer; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Sunset:
In the early evening hours of April 19, 2017, God sent his angel to touch Mary's soul and bring her to Him. We prayed for His will be done and He answered our prayers.
