On Sunday, November 27 2011, God in His infinite wisdom saw fit to
transition from our midst to eternity, our beloved, Mary Catherine Jeffries.
Mary C. Jeffries, was born June 2,1915, to the late Oliver and
Amanda Diggs. She was one of eight children, seven of which have preceded
her in death and now welcomes her to eternal rest with God: Clarence, Etta,
Elisha, Elijah, Louise, Lucy, and Percy.
Mary at an early age accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at the
Mt. Hope Baptist Church where she served as a member most of her life. Her
favorite scriptures were Psalm 23, and Matthew 6:9-15.
Mary loved to sing at her home church and after moving away, would return
for revival services. When she did, she would enter the church and head straight
for the choir room to put on her choir robe; the robe in which you will find her singing
with the choir to the glory of God!
She was educated in the Louisa County School District. She was married
to the late Cleophas Jeffries, who was an original member of The Spirit of
Bumpass Gospel Music Ensemble.
Mary was employed with The Philadelphia School District and worked as
"The Help" for many local households within Louisa County.
She enjoyed worship services, singing and cooking for her family.
In her later days, Mary spent and
enjoyed her time going to the Betty Queen Intergenerational Center, where she participated in many activities and one landed her
picture in the Central Virginian newspaper.
Though having been diagnosed with Alzheimer and congestive heart failure and
not remembering people, places, or current events, Mary always
remembered to get on her knees every night to pray to God the Father in
Heaven. And no matter what hymn during worship services was sang,
you can look to her to sing every word of the songs and the order of verses.
In addition to her siblings, Mary is preceded in death by a daughter, Delcine (Stephen, Sr.) Henderson.
Mary C. Diggs Jeffries leaves to cherish her devoted and loving great-nephew, Bernard (Nikisha ) Diggs of Louisa VA; nieces, Sabrina Harris of Fayetteville, NC and
Monica (Steven) Mason of Philadelphia, PA, all of whom she raised as her own. She is also missed by grandson "Lil" Stephen Henderson, Jr., of Philadelphia PA; granddaughter, Tanya (Rashad) Johnson of Japan and a host of neices, nephews other relatives and friends.
Mary, our "Nannie" will be eternally remembered for her strength, courage,
and undying love for her family. Her final message to us: "Keep your trust
in the Lord and have faith in God!"
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 3, 2011 at Mt. Hope Baptist Church, 5502 Paynes Mill Road, Bumpass, VA with the Rev. Dr. Monroe Smith, officiating. Interment will follow in the Diggs Family Cemetery.
