Mary Eva James, 75, was born to the late Benjamin Franklin James and Mariah Sanderson James on February 15, 1938 in Columbia,
Virginia. On May 21, 2013, God called Mary and she answered
His call. She was baptized at an early age and became a member of
Pleasent View Baptist Church in Columbia, Virginia. At age 14, she
moved to Washington, D.C., where she resided with her mother,
Mariah. She was eager to work and asked her mom for working
papers to move to New York City at 15 years of age. She worked
as a domestic engineer until she found more suitable employment.
She later moved to Bridgeport, Ct where she was employed at
Harvey Hubbell, Inc. for 32 plus years. She was also employed at Blaze Manufacturing for 3 years. She retired in 2008 and moved to
Columbus, Ohio where she lived with her daughter until passing.
Mary had 14 brothers and sisters. She attended Flat Rock elementary
school during her elementary years and went on to receive her GED as an adult. Her hobbies included going to the casino and shopping. She loved life
She became a member of Mt. Aery Baptist Church in Bridgeport
and became an usher where she served for many years. She will be dearly missed.
She has joined her daughter, Loretta James-Williams who
preceded her in death. She leaves to cherish her memories, two
daughters, Stephanie R. James of Columbus, Ohio and Robin
Romero of Shelton, Connecticut; one son-in-law, whom she liked to
call "Pete"; four grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Alvin Coleman of
Greenbelt, Maryland and Mrs. Andrew Brown of Washington. D.C.;
one brother, Floyd Lawrence of Washington, D.C.; one sister in law, Ethleen James and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins,
relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 1, 2013 at Pleasant View Baptist Church, 155 Duncan Store Road Columbia, VA 23038 with the Rev. Kevin Caleb officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
