Mary Jean Comfort was born January 26, 1932, in Orange, Virginia to the late Vivian S. Scott, Sr. and Eleanor V. Burruss Richardson. On Sunday, October 27, 2024, God called her home for eternal rest in his mansion.
Mary Jean attended Orange County Public Schools and Louisa Training School. Mary Jean also accepted Christ at an early age.
On August 14, 1948, Mary Jean Richardson and John T. Comfort, Sr. were joined in Holy Matrimony. This union brought forth two sons and two daughters. She was a respected member of the community and always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Mary Jean drove the school bus for Orange County Public Schools for 37 years. She was even awarded perfect attendance many times over her driving career.
Mary Jean was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and aunt. She assisted her family in caring for their children, grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews. Mary Jean not only took care of her family, but she also cared for her community, assisting with grocery runs and rides to medical appointments. Often, she would stop in on neighbors just to say hello. She took great joy in baking and feeding everyone her delicious sweet potato pies. Hands down she baked the best pies in town.
Mary Jean was preceded in glory by her beloved husband, John T. Comfort, Sr.; her parents, Vivian S. Richardson, Sr., and Eleanor V. Richardson; her brothers, Edward H. Richardson, Sr. (Elvira), Vivian S. Richardson, Jr (Leanora)., Harry F. Richardson, J. Howard Richardson, Sr., Lee D. Richardson (Ruth), and Roy Richardson (Elaine); her sister, Nan L. Quarles (Luther); and her grandson, Tony J. Comfort, Sr.
She leaves behind a legacy of love in the hearts of her devoted sons, John T. Comfort, Jr., and Conrad D. Comfort; her cherished daughters, Crystal M. Humes and Alyse C. Bullock; her son-in-law, Brian B. Bullock; daughters-in-love, Joyce A. Comfort, Janice Brock, and Kim Fulford; and her son-in-love, Gary Humes. She is also survived by her sisters, Ruth A. McGhee and E. Agnes Thomas; brothers, Romano Richardson, Sr. and Jack Richardson; brother-in-law, John Thomas, Sr.; sisters-in-law, Geraldine Richardson, Christine Richardson, Isabel Richardson, Jean Taylor, Ellen Johnson, Dora Comfort, Vivian Comfort, and sister-in-love Mary Lou Richardson.
Her memory will live on in her grandchildren: Kevin G. Comfort, Carrissa L. Comfort, Darryl B. Comfort, Shaunta N. Humes, Jonae N. Mason (James), Te'Kisha S. Scott (June), Jermone Banks (Taischa), Marissa Comfort, Aliyah T. Bullock, and Brian M. Bullock; her great-grandchildren: Tierra Ragland, Tony J. Comfort Jr., Antonia Jackson (Travis), Akeem Comfort, Tabraisha Comfort, Armani Comfort, Takai Comfort, Amara Comfort, Dariyon Stafford, Darius Stafford, Jayceon Comfort, Jayla Mason, Jordyn Mason, Jamison Mason, Tanaiya Faucher, Layal Faucher, Josiah Lewis, Jherkheem Banks, Jarsaun Banks, Matthew Sims, Talia A. Scott, Talise S. Scott, Ivan Scott III, and Arianna Corbin; and her great-great-grandchildren: Taj Jackson, Kehlani Comfort, Tonie L. Comfort, Messiah Sims, Cristian Sims, Matthew Sims, Jr., Aurielle Sims, and Zoey Sims.
Mary Jean is also fondly remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who were blessed by her presence.
Mary Jean will forever be remembered for her boundless love for her family, community, and her passion for baking. Above all, she possessed a giving and loving heart of pure gold.
