Martha Mae Dunn Thurston departed her earthly life for her heavenly home on Saturday, August 21, 2010 at 4:05 p.m. surrounded by her family.

She was born on October 13, 1936 to the late Martha Freeman Dunn at Saint Agnes Hospital in Raleigh, NC. She was also preceded in death by her brother PFC William Moe Dunn.

Martha was united in holy matrimony 49 years ago to John William Thurston on June 4, 1961. They were blessed with four loving children.

Her early education was in Raleigh, NC, attending high school at Washington High School and graduating from J. W. Ligon High School. She furthered her education at Saint Augustine College, Raleigh, NC majoring in Elementary Education with a minor in English. While attending St. Augustine's College she joined Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Phi Beta Chapter. She attended classes at Virginia State University, Petersburg, VA and the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA. She was an educator for 31 years. She taught in Culpeper County Public Schools for two years and Louisa County Public Schools for 29 years.

She leaves to cherish her memory her husband John William Thurston, a son, Myron Maurice Thurston of Louisa, two daughters Marlene Thurston Tweedy of Richmond, VA, Monica Melissa Thurston of Long Beach, CA, and son Mark McGhee Thurston of Owings Mills, MD, a son-in-law Edward F. Tweedy of Richmond, VA, a daughter-in-law Anita Thurston of Owings Mills, MD, five grandchildren, Jason C. Payne, Ayanna C. Tweedy, Yasmine M. Tweedy of all Richmond, VA, Maya M. Thurston, and Myles M. Thurston, of Owings Mills, MD. One sister Mazie D. Lewis (Bill) of Raleigh, NC , sister-in-laws Lillian Jones, Lucille Jones (James), Linda Collins (Sherman), and Phyllis Holland (Ronnie);Pearl Thurston, brother-in-laws Samuel Thurston (Bernice), all of Louisa, VA and Bobby Thurston, of Alexandria, VA and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Homegoing celebration will be held on Saturday, August 28, 2010 at 1 p.m. at the Mt. Gilliam New Site Baptist Church, 2212 Mansfield Road, Mineral, VA 23112 with Rev. Louis Collins, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive visitors on Friday, August 27, 2010, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Thomasson Watson Funeral Chapel 117 West Street, Louisa, VA 23093.
