Marshall Earnest Courtney was born on October 17, 1953, in Charlottesville, Virginia to the late Kenneth and Angelina Courtney. As a young boy he was baptized and joined the Mount Garland Baptist Church, Bumpass, Virginia.
Marshall was educated in the Louisa County school system. He was a great mechanic and took pride in his work. Over the years he worked for John Thomasson Funeral Home and was a construction worker in Washington D.C. He also worked at Woolfolk Manufacturing where he met, fell in love with and married Loretta Ransom, they had one daughter, Tameka.
Growing up, Marshall sang and played the bass guitar in the "Courtney Brothers" band with his brothers. He enjoyed playing sports and was a jack of all trades. Marshall never met a stranger and was willing to help anyone in need. When you saw Marshall, you were guaranteed a good laugh as he was the ultimate jokester, he had a joke for every occasion! He loved watching "Gun Smoke" and "Family Feud" as well listening to music and sitting on the porch watching the cars go by.
Marshall is survived by: his daughter, Tameka Courtney (Wendell); grandson, Alan Courtney, who he lovingly called "Pop" and his 2 year old great-granddaughter, Ayanna Courtney. Also, he leaves to cherish his memories: his brothers, Charlie (Pat), Richard (Pam) and Gary (Cheryl); devoted neighbors, Wilbert Robinson and good buddies Gregory and Mark.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Loretta R. Courtney; father, Kenneth Courtney and mother, Angelina Courtney; brothers, Marvin Courtney and Kenneth (Kee) Courtney.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at the University of Virginia Hospital ICU unit for their compassionate care.
