Marion Joseph Bates, 60 of Charlottesville, Virginia died on Saturday, June 18, 2016, at Center for Acute Hospice Care in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Born Monday, February 27, 1956 in Dinwiddie, Virginia , he was the son of the late Frank Bates and the late Josephine Booker Bates. He was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.

He attended Richmond City Public Schools.

He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.

He leaves to cherish his memories his wife Cherita Bates, his devoted daughter Shanna Shelton and her friend Donnell Crutchfield, his son Marvin Bates: two granddaughters Jasmine and Jailyn Crutchfield; he also survived by his sister June and husband Willie, brothers Andrew and wife Ann: Thomas and John; his father and mother-in-law Vergie and Eva Shelton, brother-in-laws Norman and Eva Payne, Wayne Shelton and wife Geraldine, Gerard Shelton and Vergie Shelton, Jr; sister-in-law Brenda Thomasson and Alice Payne.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 2, 2016 at Ebenezer Baptist Church Mineral.
