Throughout Marian's life, she inspired those of us closest to her to pursue our dreams; to face adversity "head-on"; to rise to the challenges that we faced; and she seemed to know that with personal determination and God's blessings – anything was possible. She embodied those values in her own life and for some of us, was a personal role model for instilling our desire for success.
Marian Evans passed away in the early morning hours of May 7, 2012, in the care of a team of physicians at Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville, VA. In her state of unconsciousness, we are almost certain that her passing was pain free.
She was born Marian Worthington Lewis on March 1, 1926 in the City of Baltimore, Maryland. She spent her childhood and coming of age in Trevilians, VA , attending Louisa Training School through graduation, after which she attended Store College in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Like many other southern african-american young adults who had come of working age, she headed North to New York City to pursue gainful employment, in the hopes of finding success and to have and raise a family of her own. It was there that she met and married George W. Evans, and together they raised their son, Bari Evans.
Marian, over the course of more than 40 years, fulfilled two "full-time sequential careers"; the first with Vision Sampling (a textile industry sample maker) and the second with the New York City Transit Authority, as a transit fare agent. Upon her retirement, she followed her elders, Gladys & Edward Mitchell and her younger sister, Ruth Taylor back to her roots in Louisa County, VA where she built a comfortable home for the Autumn of her life…..and she did all of this despite serious health challenges that she faced over the course of time.
Her faith, her spirit, her determination, and her love of God, family and friends kept her going – and we all benefited from her presence among us.
Marian is survived by her son, Bari Evans; sister, Ruth Taylor and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews. Her spirit and generosity, her kindness and compassion continues to inspire us and will remain forever alive in our hearts.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, May 11, 2012 at St. Jude's Roman Catholic Church Mineral, VA; with Rev. Michael Duffy officiating. Interment will follow in Wayland Baptist Church Cemetery Oakland Road Louisa,VA.
