"For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my depature is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith": 2 Timothy 4: 6 & 7
Lucy M. Yancey entered into eternal rest on Sunday, November 14, 2010 at Ashland Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
She was born October 11, 1911 to the late Lula Kenny. She was loved by her mother, but at a very early age, she was adopted by the late Cornelius and Nancy Jones and was reared along with the other Jones children.
She graduated from the Mt. Zion Grade School and furthered her education. In 1928, she received her teaching certificate from the State of Virginia. She taught at several schools in the county. She later became a domestic engineer for several prominent families in the Richmond area. The O. D. Dennis family continued to support her financially until her death.
During her youth, she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and was baptized and became a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. D. A. Coleman. She was a member of the Missionary Ministry, Senior Choir, where she served as secretary for many years and a regular attendee of the Sunday School. She was a dedicated member.
In the community she was a member of the Women's Federated Club and Imperial Order of King David.
In 1929, she was joined in Holy Matrimony to the late Deleware Mallory. To this union, one son, Roy Estern Mallory was born.
Lucy was known to many as "Nannie". She loved to quilt, make rolls and provide food for everyone that visited. You had to eat whether you were hungry or not. She also loved to entertain. Nannie attended the Betty Queen Senior Center and taught quilting until her health failed.
Her favorite hymn was, "I Have Decided to Follow Jesus". Whenever Robbie would visit she could always get Nannie to sing.
She leaves to cherish her memories, one son, Roy Mallory and devoted daughter-in-law Alma; five grandchildren; Armistine Cassell (Clyde), Della Nelson (Kenneth), Robbie Cosby (Thomas), Marvin Mallory (Jane) and Andrea Phillips (Kennedy) who was most devoted to overseeing the care of her grandmother; eight great-grandchildren, Sean Nelson, Chanel Cassell, Monique Mallory, Torey Cosby, Megan Nelson, Travis Phillips, Monica Mallory and Logan Phillips; two great-great children, Cayse Cassell and Cameron Nelson; foster son, Glen McVey; three foster grandchildren, Angela Walker, Annette Brandon and Glen McVey, Jr.; a host of nieces and nephews; two special friends, Mrs. Catherine Jackson and Mrs. Sarah Winston.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, November 18 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church 3909 Holly Grove Road Bumpass, VA 23024 with the Rev. Raymond J. Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in the Roselawn Memory Gardens, Glen Allen, VA.
