Johnnie Larry Hughes, Jr., 73, departed this life on Monday, June 27, 2022, at his home in Louisa, VA. Born to the late Johnnie Hughes and Mary Lou Poindexter Hughes on December 31, 1948, in New York, Johnnie was raised in Louisa by his maternal grandparents, the late Alexander and Martha Poindexter. The late Rev. Joe Peterson baptized Johnnie at First Baptist Church in Louisa at a young age.

In 1966, he graduated from A.G. Richardson and followed up with a career as a delivery manager for You Drive It and Fleetwood Transportation. Before his retirement in 2015, Johnnie worked as a correctional officer for Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women, where he was promoted to Sergeant in 2010.

Johnnie was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents; wife, Carolyn Smith Hughes and brothers, Albert Hughes and Alonzo Lennie Hughes.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted friend, Katrina Wingate; his daughters, Sonya "So-So" Hall (Calvin Jr.), Andrea "Angie" Johnson (Aaron), and Armenta "Minkie'' Hughes (Marcus Burton); grandchildren, China Hall, Calvin "3" Hall, Kayla Vaughan, Lauryn Vaughan, and Jordan Hughes; great-granddaughter, Kylie; brother, Mark Hughes Sr. (Priscilla); sisters, Suzette "Kim" Brown, and Sheila Brown; sisters-in-law, Jane "Vickie" Smith, Hattie Williams, Josephine Rasberry, Penny Smith Grant, and Vivian Smith and brothers-in-law, Presley Smith and Leon Smith. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 2, 2022 in The Sun Chapel at D. D. Watson, Louisa.
