In the early morning hours of November 1, 2024, John Edward Divers answered his Father's call to come live with Him in heaven.
John was one of eight children born to the late John Wilbert Divers and the late Mary Rucker Divers. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Dollie Mae Divers; brother, William Ronald Divers; and a niece, Amy Nicole Sanders.
John , ("Penny" as he was affectionately called by family and friends), was born in Bedford, Virginia April 4, 1942. He received his education in Roanoke City Public Schools and graduated from Lucy Addison High School class of 1961. He was a member of the Addison Concert Choir and Track Team. He furthered his education by attending Trade Schools, internships and life experiences.
John's professional career included employment with the Roanoke City Public School System and the Charlottesville Public School System. While he was head of the Maintenance Department of the Charlottesville Public School System, he designed the current logo displayed on the maintenance vehicles. After retiring from the school system, John became Renovations Project Manager for Elkford Apartments and developed an interest in antiques.
At a young age, John committed himself to Christ at Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church in Roanoke. When he moved to Charlottesville, he joined Galilee Baptist Church. He was a member of the Men's choir and a faithful supporter of the missions of the Church. John may have been short in physical stature, but he was a giant of a man when it came to his faith in God, compassion for others, spirit of gratitude, humility, and love of family.
His greatest passion was music. John's tenor voice spoke to the heart and elevated the spirit to a higher place. This love of music led him to organize the singing group, "The Gospel Crusaders." This anointed group provided services in Charlottesville and throughout the state.
His legacy of love, hope, sincerity, and beautiful music will continue to inspire those who knew and loved him. For 82 years John was with us and now he is at peace, resting with God.
John is survived by his wife, Susie Fortune Divers; son, Paul Divers (Doris); daughter, Melissa Billingsley; son, Clarence Fortune (Bessie); grandchildren, Deandre' Divers, Tarell Divers, Te'Andrea Billingsley, Clarence Fortune, Jr., Tzeira Ginn (Alan), Briana Garland and Brian Garland; great grandchildren, TaMya Divers, Kianthony Blake, Anahz'on Billingsley, Armaahd Billingsley, Mahzi James; sisters, Mary D. Hackley, Terry L. Divers, Tonie D. Sanders (Clarence), Brenda D. Wiley (Walter), Denise D.
