John Henry Banks, 72, of Charlottesville, formally of Louisa, departed this earthly life peacefully at his residence on Saturday, December 24, 2011 surrounded by family. He was born in Louisa County on May 28, 1939 to the late Phillip and Mary Poindexter Banks.
He was educated in Louisa County Public School system and served in the United States Army. At an early age, he confessed Christ as his personal Savior and joined Oak Grove Baptist Church. He enjoyed attending church and Sunday School. When this church was united with Bright Hope Baptist Church, he moved his membership to a church in Washington, DC where he remained for the next 40 years.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Wilson-Banks; three brothers, William Louis, Phillip Leroy and Henry Edward Banks. He leaves to cherish his memories, his devoted friend, Ruth Burns; one son, Ollie; two step daughters, Yolanda and Tonya Wilson; 4 treasured grandchildren, Vernon, Shaniqua, Brandon Wilson and Pandora Young; a loving sister, Elsie Arnette of Louisa, VA; caring brothers, James Banks of Lusby, MD, Donald Harris of Charlottesville, VA, and Russell Banks of King George, VA; 3 brothers in law, Elvin Green, Sr. of Oxon Hill, Maryland, David Green of Springfield, VA and William Arnette of Louisa, VA; 3 sisters in law and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends of whom were blessed to know him.
John loved laughing and being with his family and friends. He touched the lives of many people with his smile and generosity and maintained his trademark sense of humor all the way to the end.
Friends and family are invited to attend funeral services on Friday, December 30, 2011 at 1 pm in the Thomasson Watson Funeral Chapel, 117 West Street, Louisa, VA 23093. Burial with military honors will follow in the Bright Hope Baptist Cemetery.
