Jerry Harris Taylor, 89, of Mineral,Virginia died Friday, February 29, 2008 at McGuire Veteran Hospital Richmond, Virginia. He was born April 5, 1918 and was the son of the late Mary West and Thomas Monroe Harris, Sr. He was later adopted and reared by Frank and Jane Taylor. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna White Taylor, his grandson, Carl Taylor and three brothers, Conway Harris, Thomas Monroe Harris, Jr., and William(Big Bill)Harris. In his youth, he professed Christ, was baptized and became a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Wallace Johnson. Mr. Taylor was a member of the choir and an active member of the Usher Board until his health began to fail.
He attended Louisa County Public Schools prior to serving his country in the United States Marine Corps in WW II. He was employed by Walton & Wood Lumber Company and Louisa County Public Schools as a part-time custodian. He was well loved by his community.
He leaves to cherish his memory three sons; Jerry of Landover, MD, Charlie Lee of Portsmouth, Virginia and Henry (Onedia) of Richmond, Virginia; six sisters; Sadie Johnson (Frank), Florence Pace, Claire Brown, Betty Nelson (Jesse) of Mineral, Virginia; Laura Evans of Richmond, Virginia and Helen Jones of Washington, DC; six grandchildren, two step grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, seven step great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousin and friends. Mr. Taylor also leaves a devoted and special friend Virginia Lipscomb and her daughter Camelina and granddaughter Renee, Eugene Houchens, favorite cousins, Barbara Dandridge, and daughter-in-law Onedia (Mae), who was his primary care giver. Jerry had a special love for his step great grandchild, Aniya who brought much joy to his life. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Saturday, March 8, 2008 at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 864 Pendleton Road Mineral, Virginia 23117, with the Rev. Roger M. Jones officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the church cemetery.
