Jennie Eva Tomes was born on September 19, 1940, in Louisa, Virginia to Elsie Edna West and Wesley Wayne West. She was one of nine children born into this union. Jennie met and married Donald Benjamin Tomes. From this union, two sons were born Donald Bernard and Clarence Benjamin. Jennie was a quiet and meek person, with a beautiful spirit. She was a homemaker and loved to take care of her husband and children. Jennie spent her pastime listening to gospel music and watching her favorite television programs.

She especially enjoyed watching General Hospital, All My Children, and gospel Evangelist Oral Roberts. Jennie departed this life on Friday, September 8, 2023.

Jennie leaves to cherish her memory two sons Donald Bernard, and Clarence Benjamin, three grandchildren Donald James, Daniel McPhatter, Leeah Marlene-Jennie, one great-granddaughter Zoé Rose, two brothers James Henson (Evelyn), and Welford West, seven sisters Doris Foster, Barbara Hughes, Joan Johnson (Clarence), Caroline West, Julia Jackson, Loberta West, and Marin West and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Preceding her in death are her husband Donald Benjamin Tomes, and sisters Frances Yancy-Olaifa and Altomay West.
