Jean Moss Holland, age 73, entered peaceful and quiet eternal rest on September 17, 2012, at
the Halquist Memorial Inpatient Center, Arlington, Virginia.

She was the youngest of three children
born to the late Henry Spurgeon Moss, Jr. and Ruth Minor Moss, Louisa County, Virginia. Early in
her life, Jean accepted Christ and was baptized at Laurel Hill Baptist Church, Mineral, Virginia.

She served as a devoted member, fulfilled several church staff positions, and for many years provided
college scholarships for young men and woman in the local community.

At an early age, Jean attended A.G. Richardson High School with many of her relatives and friends.
After graduating from high school, Jean went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from North
Carolina Central College, Durham, North Carolina. She later married Wilbur Layne Beck. The birth
of their son, Marlon K. Beck, was a time of great joy and celebration for them.

Jean was employed for over 35 years at the Howard University Dentistry Department located in
Washington, D.C. During her tenure there, she made many friends and established relationships
that she treasured throughout her life. After retirement from Howard University in March 2001, she
moved back to the Moss home place where she resided until May 2012.

In June 2012, Jean moved
to the Washington D.C. area to reside with her son, daughter- in-law, and two grandchildren.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents and brother, H. Spurgeon Moss (Jim). Jean leaves to
cherish her memory and celebrate her legacy, one son COL (R) Marlon Beck (Keith) and daughterin-
law COL (R) Yvonne Prettyman-Beck; two grandchildren, Melissa Beck and Marlon Beck II; one
sister, Shirley Wells; brother-in-law Major Wells; sister-in-law Helen Moss; two nephews, Darryl
Moss and Major Wells, Jr. (MJ); and a host of well-loved cousins, other relatives, and friends


Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday, September 22, 2012. Family will receve friends from 10-11:30 a.m. at Laurel Hill Baptist Church, Mineral Virginia. Interment will follow in the Moss Family Cemetery.
