Janie Mae Bruce Holland , affectionately known as Pie, passed away peacefully at her home in Palmyra, Virginia, on Sunday, March 30, 2025. She was born on May 6, 1939, to the late Horace and Ruth Bruce.
Janie dedicated her life to both her family and her community. Most recently, she worked as a guide at the Visitors Center at the Best Western Hotel in Zion Crossroads, VA, when the hotel first opened. Throughout the years, she embraced many roles—serving as a rescue squad driver, certified nurse, substitute teacher, and cafeteria worker. She also wrapped gifts at Belk during the holiday season, volunteered at election polls for several years, and played a key role in organizing the Happy Face Toy Drive for over 20 years. Yet, her most treasured role was that of a devoted wife and mother—a calling in which she truly excelled.
From an early age, Janie accepted Christ into her life and remained a faithful member of County Line Baptist Church until her health declined. She loved attending County Line and other churches in the community. In 1952, love brought her and Earl Holland together, and they married in October 1956. Their union was blessed with four children: Curtis, Kenneth, Earl, and Dorreen.
Janie was well known and deeply loved by all who knew her. She was a soft-spoken, classy woman who never complained and always carried herself with grace. She had a flair for fashion, often seen in her signature long pleated skirts and dresses. She also had a love for softball and traveling. Generous and kind-hearted, she was always willing to lend a helping hand, giving and loving wholeheartedly.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl; her parents, Horace and Ruth Bruce; her brothers, Shirley Bruce and Horace Bruce Jr.; and her sisters, Doris Price, Ruth Turpin, and Reva Salley.
Janie leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. She is survived by her three sons: Curtis Holland of Kents Store, VA; Kenneth (Deborah) Holland of Palmyra, VA; and Earl S. (Nikki) Holland of Palmyra, VA; her daughter, Dorreen Holland of Palmyra, VA; and her daughter-in-law, Lorretta Carey of Barboursville, VA. She is also survived by two brothers-in-law, William Holland of Washington, D.C., and Carroll Holland of Alexandria, VA; and one sister-in-law, Shirley Holland of Upper Marlboro, MD.
Her beloved grandchildren—nine grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter—will forever hold her memory close. She also leaves behind devoted friends Gretchen Stevens, Diana Washington, and Rev. Phillip and Helen Carter, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who will continue to cherish her memory.
PER THE FAMILY'S REQUEST, THERE WILL BE NO VISITATION/VIEWING.
