On the morning of Thursday, November 19, 2015 the death angel paid a surprise call to the residence of James Edward Scruggs.

James was born on November 6, 1932 to Grace A. Scruggs in the county of Buckingham, Virginia.

He attended the local schools and worked at numerous jobs during his youth.

On December 25, 1954 James was joined in marriage to Geraldine White. This union was blessed with three children. In 1956, James made the decision to move north to Baltimore where much of his family resided.

In 1959, James joined and was baptized at the Fulton Baptist Church in Baltimore under the pastorate of the Reverend Benjamin Jackson. In the '70s, James moved his membership to the Olivet Baptist Church under the pastorate of Bishop Wilbur Watson, where he served on the board of Trustees. In 1981, James moved to the New Christian Memorial Church where he served as the Chairman of Trustees until he moved to the Chairman of Deacons for more than twenty years under the direction of Dr. Walter Bronson, Jr.

June 28, 1998 James returned to his beloved Buckingham and immediately joined the Baptist Union family. He served as a deacon until his health began to fail. The missionary ministry honored him as grandfather of the church. He was truly loved as a humble servant of God.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Grace A. Scruggs; his loving sisters, Elsie Boldien and Delores Scruggs; and his brothers, George (Bessie), Harvey (Lenora), and Cecil.

Fond memories will be cherished by his wife of 61 years, Geraldine; children, Ronnie (Louise), Carol L. Logan and Delores Hill (Frank); grandchildren, Jamal and Trinise Scruggs, Christina Logan and Ronnie Booker Jr.; great-grandchildren, Takira Hicks and Sameera Foster; sister, Alma Barnes; brother, Junior Scruggs (Irma); sisters-in-law, Edmonia Toney, Eleanor White and Daisy White; brothers-in-law, Charles White and Waverly Bolden; aunts, Martha Ann Bolden, Sarah Hendricks, Florine Booker and Kate L. Childress; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.

Funeral services will be held at 12:30pm on Saturday, November 28, 2015 in the sanctuary of Baptist Union Baptist Church, 125 Baptist Rd., Dillwyn, Virginia 23936, with the Rev. Timothy Jackson officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
