Early on the morning of January 28, 2021, Indiana Taper Whitley departed this life, only two months shy of her 102nd birthday. Indiana slipped away in her sleep after months of illness.
She was born on March 24, 1919, the youngest of John and Indiana Taper's four children. The family lived near Jamesville, North Carolina.
An untimely death took Indiana's father months before her birth. Her mother had to relocate north to New York for employment and Indiana stayed in NC with her grandmother. Her grandmother prepared her well and she was accepted by Elizabeth City State Teachers College. After graduating from college, she taught elementary school in North Carolina.
Indiana met Arthur Lee Whitley when he returned home to NC after World War II. They were married in 1947 and eventually moved to Philadelphia PA. Their son, Kenneth, was born in 1953. Indiana and Arthur also raised a daughter, Amelia.
Indiana returned to teaching in 1959 and continued working in the classroom for another 25 years. She was active in her local church (Philippians Baptist Church of Philadelphia), The National Association of University Women and her sorority (Phi Delta Kappa).
Indiana moved to the Charlottesville area ten years ago.
Our hearts are deeply saddened by her passing but we know she is with her maker and no longer suffering.
She is survived by her son, daughter-In-law (Sandra), Amelia's three children, and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
