Hurma Arlean Shelton Harrison, a native of Louisa, Virginia, was born on Wednesday, February 5, 1941 to the late Fleming D. Shelton, Sr. and Lillie B. Shelton. The seventh of seven children, Hurma brought richness to life with her warm smile and vibrant spirit. In December of 1962, she was married to Frederick E. Harrison. On Saturday January 10, 2015, she completed the final chapter of her earthly home and silently entered her place of eternal rest.
Hurma was filled with a genuine concern for those who crossed her path. She will be especially remembered for her love of Christ, her passion for helping others, pride in her community, tenacious spirit. Hurma inspired others with her encouraging words and heart of kindness. She was deeply devoted to her family and enjoyed spending priceless moments of laughter and love.
After graduating from A. G. Richardson High School, Louisa, Hurma briefly attended Virginia State University. While matriculating there, she studied Elementary Education. She returned home to pursue her true passion and enrolled in Butler's Beauty School. After obtaining her Cosmetology license, she lived in Louisa, VA and was a proud business owner (Hurma's Beauty Shop, Harrison's Concept Hair Designs and Just Hair) and Hair Stylist for 38 years. She received her Associate Masters Degree in Cosmetology from the National Institute of Cosmetology, of the National Beauty Culturists' League.
She also worked as a teacher's aide in Louisa County Schools and taught cosmetology for an interim term at the Vocational Center for Orange County Public Schools. She retired in 1997 due to disability. While a Resident at Louisa Health and Rehabilitation Center, Louisa, VA she served on the Residents Council as President and Vice-President. She helped form a Residents Choir and attended church services at the facility as often as she could. She continued to uplift others in the midst of her illness.
Hurma received Christ at an early age at Zion Travelers Baptist Church in Louisa, Virginia where she was an active and devoted member of Zion Travelers Baptist Church she served as a Trustee, Choir Member, Hospitality Committee participant and Pastor's Aid Club. Later she joined First Baptist Church, Louisa, Virginia where she enjoyed participating in fund raising and attending services until she was no longer able to do so. She also was a member of the Charlottesville Beauticians Club and N.A.A.C.P. She was crowned Ms. Virginia State Beautician, and was the recipient of a Trend Setters Award from Designer's Touch hair care products. She loved to entertain friends and family with the lovely meals she prepared, loved beautiful surroundings and took pride in her home and appearance. She loved to plant flowers and sharing the good news of God.
As she lay in the bed during her final days, she continued to praise God and glorified His Holy Name. Hurma will always be remembered for her ability to uplift the discouraged, her special gift of esteeming others before herself and touched the lives of so many with her compassionate spirit.
Hurma leaves to cherish her memories: a devoted and loving daughter, Freda James (Jamale); one step-son, Frederick E. Harrison, Jr. (Brenda); one precious granddaughter, Halle Harrison; four step-grandchildren, Chad Harrison (Jana), Brian Harrison, Nicole Harrison and Ian James; three step great grandchildren, Aisha Harrison, Talashia Harrison and Jalen Harrison; one sister, Beulah Morris and two brothers, Fleming D. Shelton, Jr. , Ivor M. Shelton, Sr. (Mary); two devoted nieces, Patricia Russell (David) and Tee-Tee Jackson and a host of other loving relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fleming D. Shelton, Sr. and Lillie B. Shelton; one daughter, Baby Girl Harrison (Sandra); one sister, Nannie N. Easton; two brothers , Golden M. Shelton, Clyde G. Shelton.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, January 16, 2015 at Thomasson Watson Funeral Chapel.
Services will be held at First Baptist Church, 102 Meadow Avenue, Louisa, Virginia on January 17, 2015 at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in the Zion Traveler's Baptist Church Cemetery, 3662 Roundabout Road, Louisa, Virginia.
