Herbert Winfield Burgess, Sr., 85, departed this earthly life on March 18, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his loving family, including Pastor Ryan Holcomb. He was born to the late Joe Burgess and Sylvia Ragland Burgess.
Herbert attended Louisa County Public Schools and was a member of Foster Creek Baptist Church. He was known for his kind heart and willingness to help anyone in need. Herbert took great pride in working on and sharpening chainsaw blades for members of his community. He was an honest and hardworking man who never hesitated to lend a helping hand. He also enjoyed fishing and spent many years working in the logging industry, including employment at the Chip Inc., until his health declined.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Emma Catherine Burruss Burgess; his son, Herbert Winfield Burgess, Jr.; his grandson, Jermaine Scott; his sisters, Mattie Erkard and Julia Grooms; his brother, Carl Burgess; & his son-in-law, Herbert Carter.
Herbert leaves to cherish his memory four devoted daughters: Kathleen Carter, Debra Holt (Irvin), Sylvia Fortune (Floyd), all of Louisa, Virginia, and Janie Johnson (James) of Charlottesville, Virginia. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Donnie Burgess (Carla) of Manakin Sabot, Virginia; Jerome Johnson, Josh Johnson, and Brittany Johnson of Charlottesville, Virginia; and Janay Burgess of Louisa, Virginia; along with 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild expected in October 2026.
He is further survived by two sisters, Linda Bishop and Fannie Bishop; one brother, Joseph Burgess (Mary), all of Louisa, Virginia; and a host of nieces and nephews.
To the Burgess family, we at D. D. Watson offer our most sincere sympathy and condolences. Our prayer continues to be that your abiding faith in God will lend to you a measure of comfort that will strengthen and sustain you during your time of sorrow.
It is during such times as these that we draw upon our faith, stand upon our scriptures, and rely upon our God. There is no question that in this and through this, God will keep you, comfort you, and sustain you. You and your family are forever in our prayers.
