A time to be born... Deacon Harry Lewis Harris (Pa Pa) was the oldest of four children, born on December 12, 1916, in Cuckoo, Virginia, to the late Lewis and Mary Cosby Harris. His three brothers Fred, Johnnie, and Walter preceded him in death. A time to build… His early education was obtained in Louisa County. He enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served for four years- three months- and eleven days in Europe during World War II. While serving, he received five Decorations and Citations which included the American Defense Service Metal, American Theater Service Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Metal, and World War II Victory Ribbon. After his departure from the military, he worked as a cook at a local sawmill and retired from Henrico County Highway Department after 28 years of service. Having a love for people and especially children, he obtained a job as custodian for Louisa County where he retired after 10 years of service. A time to love… He was united in Holy Matrimony to the love of his life, Dorothy Ophelia Cosby for 63 years. He loved to tell the story of how he saw her ushering at a local church and it was love at first sight. They dated while he served in the military and got married upon his return home. Their union was blessed with two loving children, Harry Jr. who preceded his death and their daughter, Gloria. A time to serve God… At an early age, Harry gave his life to Christ, and was baptized at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Mineral, VA, where he remained a faithful Deacon, Church Sexton, member of the Usher Board, and Missionary Society until last years of his life. A time to serve his Community… He was a faithful member of the Louisa Masonic Lodge #113 where he served as Chaplain until his health failed, also a member of the Royal Arch Lodge and the local NAACP Chapter. A time to unwind… He loved to stay busy and spent many hours of his awaking day gardening, landscaping, and serving his community. A time to die… After many years of beating all odds of illness, God called him home for sweet rest on October 18, 2009. A time to weep… Harry leaves to cherish his loving memory, a loving and devoted wife, Dorothy C. Harris; a cherished and loving Daughter; Evangelist Gloria Yates; five Grandchildren, Elder Cordell Yates (Devin), Ashburn, VA; Shonda Harris-Muhammed (Demetrius), Richmond, VA; Shelia Phillips (Tory), Richmond, VA; William Coleman, Norfolk, VA; Clifford of, Alexandria, VA; nine Great-grandchildren; a devoted God-daughter Mariama Bamfield, and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, October 24, 2009 at Ebenezer Baptist Church 864 Pendleton Road Mineral, Virginia with Evangelist Gloria H. Yates officiating. Interment with Military and Masonic rites will follow in the church cemetery.
