Ms. Gertine Washington, 69, of Cross, South Carolina was born on November 1, 1942 in Charleston, SC to the late Mattie Grant and raised by Rev. Samuel C. and Essie Bell President. She departed this life after a brief illness on August 8, 2012 at her home surrounded by family and friends.

She grew up in Cross and attended Central High School. As a youth, she became a member of Zion United Methodist Church and served faithfully. In the early sixties she moved to Newark, NJ and later to Boston, Mass. She finally settled in Elmsford, New York.

For many years she worked two jobs; at a pharmaceutical company in Ardsley, NY and at the Bank of New York in Harrison, NY. She was a very loyal and dedicated worker. In 1990 she retired and returned to the big city of Cross.

Those who will remember her always are: her children, Virginia R. President, Yonkers, New York and Eric President, Cross, SC; her siblings, Kenneth President, Riverside, CA, Richard Ravenell, Bronx, NY, Edward Grant, Bronx, NY, Thomas (Sheila) Grant, Randolph, MA, Ella Cooper, Browntown, SC, and Roberta (D.D.) Watson, Louisa, VA; one sister-n-law, Lila Mae President; two grandsons, Najee Barnes and Christopher Webb; two aunts, Ernestine Funches, Jamacia, NY and Lucy Williams, Branchville, SC and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at Zion United Methodist Church in Cross, SC with the Reverend Barbara L. Reid officiating.
