Garrett Lenwood Johnson,81, affectionately known as Lenwood, departed this earthly life on March 24, 2016, at The University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, VA. Born June 18, 1934 in Louisa, Virginia, he was the son of the late John F. and Irene Woodley Johnson. At an early age, Lenwood accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his savior and joined the Laurel Hill Baptist Church in Mineral, VA. Lenwood received his formal education at the Louisa Training School. After graduating, he moved to Washington, DC, where he married his high school sweetheart, Daphne Wright. He later relocated his family back to Virginia, reaffilliating with Laurel Hill Church where he sang in the choir, served as a trustee, and was later ordained as a deacon. He was employed by the United States Postal Service and also labored more than 25 years with George Hyman Construction Company. After retiring from construction, he accepted a job as a bus driver for Louisa County Public Schools where his pupils affectionately referred to him as "J." After a few years of bus driving, he fully retired and enjoyed spending time with his family,especially his grandchildren. Lenwood was preceded in death by all of his siblings, including seven brothers: Roy, Walter, Merrell, Lawrence, Napoleon, Alfred, and Jasper Johnson and four sisters: Bertha Wood, Hazel Moss, Ellaree Johnson, and Susie Goldston. His sons Aaron L. and Mark A. also preceded him. To cherish his memory, he leaves his loving wife of 62 years, Daphne Johnson, three sons: Garrett (Clara) of Spotsylvania VA, Lenwood of Washington DC and Dale (Carmella) of Louisa, VA; two daughters: Daphne (Daniel) Johnson of Mechanicsville, VA and Stephanie (Harry) Mosby of Ladysmith, VA; daughter-in law, Debbie Raines Johnson; thirteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two brothers-in-law: Steve (Louise) Wright and Walter Young; five sisters-in-law including, Julia Johnson, his extended family Harvey and Michelle Johnson of Landover, Maryland; uncle-in-law: Russell Stewart and his wife Mary; aunts-in-law: Pearl Lena Thurston and Mamie Stewart and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends, including a devoted caregiver, William Stewart. The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 27, 2016 from 6-8 p.m. at The Sun Chapel @ D. D. Watson Mortician, Inc. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, March 28, 2016 at Laurel Hill Baptist Church, 7652 Kentucky Spring Road Mineral, VA 23117 with Rev. Calvin Ascraft officiating
and Rev. Barry Carpenter eulogist. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
