Garfield William Nelson, Sr, 79, departed this life on Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at Henrico Doctors Hospital in Richmond, Virginia.
He was born October 18, 1929 in Mineral, Virginia, educated in the Louisa County Public Schools system and was baptized and became a member of Laurel Hill Baptist Church.
Garfield retired from Hyman Brothers Construction in Washington,D.C.
Preceded in death by his lovely wife, Frances Nelson, he leaves to cherish his memories, three daughters, Alconia Anderson (Rev.Temple, Sr.) of Mineral, Virginia; Shirldean Callis (Sam) of Powhatan, Virginia; and Brenda Anderson (Rodney) of Mineral, Virginia; one son, Garfield, Jr. (fiancé' Helen Hunter) of Mineral, Virginia; one god-daughter, Emily Burruss of Louisa, Virginia; four grandchildren, Temple Anderson, Jr. (Chelle), Keshawn Terry (Avis), Towana Hope and Kashawnda Anderson; nine great-grandchildren, Lamond, Taji, Brittney, Kavia, Avisha, Isa, Malik, Heavan and Tre'von; three brothers, James Minor (Helyne) of Powhatan, VA, Curtis Shelton (Julia), Leslie Shelton ( Mary), all of Mineral, Virginia; one sister, Diane Wright of Orange, New Jersey; four sisters-n-law, Della Carter of Louisa, Virginia, Margaret Houchens, Carrie "Ann" Shelton and Grace Shelton, all of Mineral, Virginia; a number of nieces and nephews; two devoted friends, Lorraine Jackson and Frances Hunter of Mineral,Virginia.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to the following: Louise Jackson of Richmond, Willie Ann Hunter, Stephanie Saunders, Mary Johnson and Pauleen Molina, all of Mineral VA; Henrico Doctors Hospital (Forest Campus) for being so kind during this difficult time, and a special thanks to The Laurel's of University Park of Richmond, Virginia.
Funeral services will held at 3 P.M. Saturday, March 21, 2009 at Laurel Hill Baptist Church 7652 Kentucky Spring Road Mineral, Virginia 23117 with Rev. Barry Carpenter officiating. Interment will follow in the Rising Sun Baptist Church Cemetery 6829 Frederick Hall Road Mineral, Virginia 23093.
