Frances Elizabeth Winston, of Gordonsville, Virginia, departed this earthy life on Thursday, May 19, 2011, at the University of Virginia Hospital. Born July 25, 1933 in Nelson County, Virginia, she was known to many as "Nanny". She was a loving, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt.
Frances was predeceased by her father, James Awkward; mother, Chassie Awkward; husband, George E. Winston, Sr.; a son, Major Winston; a daughter, Brenda Carter; three brothers, James (Bill) Garrett and Genie Awkward and one sister, Maggie Taylor.
She leaves to cherish her memories: one loving and devoted daughter, Betty Curry of Charlottesville, Virginia; four sons, George Winston, Jr. (June), of Ohio, Timothy, Larry and Robert (Kenny) Winston, all of Gordonsville, Virginia; four sisters, Gladys Bell of Virginia, Delores Bell , Shirley Lyles and Chassie White, all of New Jersey; two brothers, George and Lindsay Awkward , both of New Jersey and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great- great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, as well as a multitude of other family and friends.
Frances was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
A celebration of her life will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at Union Baptist Church, 312 Cobb Street Gordonsville, VA 22942. Interment will follow in the Woodberry Cemetery.
