Evelyn L. Carter , daughter to the late Warren Carter, Sr. and Lucile White Carter, was born on June 9, 1952, in Orange, Virginia. Evelyn was surrounded by loved ones when she transitioned and received her heavenly wings on February 11, 2024, at UVA Health Culpeper Medical Center.
Evelyn accepted Jesus Christ at an early age at Orange Grove Baptist Church, Unionville, Virginia. She attended Sunday school, sang in the choir, and developed a faith walk with the Lord, which gave her an amazingly positive strength to endure and overcome many life challenges.
Evelyn attended Orange County public schools, where she took home economic classes that taught her sewing. This became a lifetime skill. She made many different outfits, but one of her favorite designs was her prom dress. Despite her newly developed passion and the suggestion from her counselor to consider domestic work for a living, Evelyn had other ambitions. After graduating from high school in 1970, Evelyn got in the fastest car she could and got out of "dodge" aka Orange County. Her destination was Maryland, where she went to stay with her Aunt Bettye Jones-Isom and started her career with Prince George's Community College in Largo, Maryland. While there, Evelyn led a fulfilling career as an application and financial administrator. She helped countless students get financial aid and encouraged many to complete their education. Later, during her career, Evelyn attended night classes and received her Associate of Business Administration. In 2002, Evelyn retired from Prince George's Community College.
Evelyn was no stranger to hard work. During her childhood and teenage years, Evelyn would help her mother prepare meals for the family and do housework while her brothers and dad farmed the land. She inherited the cooking gene from her mother, grandmothers, and aunts and always had something on the stove whenever someone visited. Some of her signature dishes were fried potatoes, mac and cheese, chicken salad, and potato salad.
Evelyn was a trailblazer. Before ride sharing services were created, she was a five-star Uber driver for many family members. She made sure Aunt Marjorie, Aunt Anna, and Aunt Ruth arrived promptly and safely to Carter's Lane and Orange Baptist Church from Washington D.C. In her spare time, Evelyn loved to shop at Macy's, Lord and Taylor, CVS, and Food Lion. She had impeccable taste for quality clothes, purses, and accessories. She was a thrifty shopper and a coupon guru. Evelyn also loved reading the daily newspaper, magazines, and listening to music. She had a sharp memory that recalled names, events, and dates. She was very sociable and always greeted people with a warm smile and a hearty laugh. Evelyn was a loving, compassionate, generous, caring, faith-filled, and strong woman. She enriched the lives of her family, friends, and community. Evelyn has left a legacy to be a blessing to others. She will be deeply missed.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Warren and Lucile Carter, sister, Gloria Lovelace, and nephew, David Carter.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her brothers, Warren Carter, Jr., Michael Carter, Sr.(Ann), Bruce Carter, Keith Carter; brother- in- love, Carroll Lovelace(Evelyn); nephews and nieces, Michael Carter Jr., Amanda Carter, Nicole Armstrong(Steven), Brandon Lovelace, Miles Carter; aunts and uncles, Elizabeth Campbell, Bernice Byrd, Arlene Standard(Vanward), Mamie Harper(Archie), Annie Carter, Bettye Ann Carter, Beauford White, Edward White(Diane), Kenneth Pretty, Sr.; great nephews and niece, Bakiem Smith, Mekhael Carter III, Yahir Carter, Shmael Carter, Carter Armstrong, and Camden Armstrong; a host of cousins, friends, and the Orange Grove Baptist family.
