A Time to be Born…
Edith Mae Byers, daughter of the late Willie and Ruth Brooks was born on April 25, 1935, in Louisa, Virginia. She was the third born of eight children.
A Time to Grow…
Edith was reared with the love and support of a hardworking, Christian family in Louisa, Virginia. She was a member of Eagle Baptist Church and attended Louisa County Public Schools. Edith enjoyed life, she loved to travel, she was very fashionable, she loved to laugh, dance, host and cook for family and friends. She was fun but as much as she loved you, she did not tolerate any foolishness. In her earlier years, she was a domesticated worker providing nanny and caregiving services. In her later years, she continued her work in ministry, speaking at engagements, working in the church and taking care of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A Time to Love…
Edith married the love of her life Clinton Byers and the two shared 62 wonderful years together. They had one child, a daughter, Barbara. Barbara would later bless them with five grandchildren, William, Darren, LaShon, Deven and Sara, who captured their hearts and meant the world to them. Edith enjoyed and cherished her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
She attended and supported their events, basketball games, football games, and was known for cheering their teams on, standing tall; as she would shout from the bleachers "Grandma's watching boys, play ball", earning her the nickname "Grandma Goodies" for feeding the players snacks after games and when at home, baking homemade desserts for her grandchildren. Edith was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She faithfully loved and supported her family, and she wasn't the type of person who would just call you, she would always come to see about you, pray over you, feed you and leave you with a positive word from God to carry on.
Edith valued family and friendships, and she embodied the true definition of love. God took his time when he created her because he knew the world needed a person who was bold and fearless enough to walk through the fire and then return carrying water for those still burning. To many people, she truly was their bridge over troubled water. Edith loved out loud and her heart was pure.
A Time to Worship…
Edith loved God, and her faith was greater than any obstacle she would ever face. At an early age she accepted Christ and became a member of Eagle Baptist Church. She would later relocate to the Washington, DC area for over thirty years and while there, she would explore her faith and begin her journey into the ministry of God. Edith was ordained as a minister, in 1980.
She served as a faithful leader in the church through her missionary work, bible teachings, leading children's ministry and speaking all over in different churches. In 1993, she would later return to Virginia, where she would worship at her home church, Eagle Baptist until her health declined and she could no longer physically attend. Though she was not present in the building, her faith in God, prayers for others and constant biblical studies remained.
A Time to Rest…
God knew that Edith needed to rest as her hills had become harder to climb. God whispered softly in her ear and said you have done well my child, and your work here is done. Edith passed peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, March 30, 2025 with her daughter by her side, holding her hand.
A Time to Mourn…
Edith leaves to cherish her memories, her daughter, Barbara Blackshear; her sister, Dorothy Poindexter (Aubrey); her brothers, George Brooks and Linwood Brooks; her brothers-in law, Donald Byers (Mary) and Curtis Byers (Carolyn); four grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; twenty great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that she loved. Edith was preceded in death by her husband, Clinton Byers, her brothers, Junior Brooks and Frank Brooks, her sisters, Mildred Simms and Susie Davis, her grandson, Deven Blackshear and granddaughter, Taylor Ponder. Edith will continue to live in our hearts forever and her grandchildren will forever hear the echoes of her voice singing "I love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck and I bet you five dollars I do".
Let us celebrate the life of Evangelist Edith M. Byers, an extraordinary woman of faith who touched our lives. We invite you to share your memories of Edith on the memorial page, as we remember her life and the legacy that she leaves behind.
To the Byers family, we at D. D. Watson offer our most sincere sympathy and condolences. Our prayer continues to be that your abiding faith in God will lend to you a measure of comfort that will strengthen and sustain you during your time of sorrow.
