"The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh.
Blessed be the name of the Lord."

Dorothy Jane Hughes Myles, often called "Dottie" was the sixth of fifteen children. The daughter of the late John Henry Hughes, Sr. and the late Martha Jane ("Jannie") Hughes was born on February 23, 1914 in Buckner, Virginia.

Dottie received her early education in the public schools of Buckner, Virginia. Following the Christian leadership of her parents, she joined the Mount Garland Baptist Church at an early age and attended regularly until she was united in holy matrimony to Henry Lee Myles, Sr. on June 3, 1939. They moved to Mt. Vernon, New York and became active members at Macedonia Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. Richard H. Dixon. She also joined and was a faithful member of the Order of Eastern Stars Progressive Chapter #42, Mt. Vernon, NY.

Dottie retired from Kukla Electric Company, Mt. Vernon, NY after 23 years of service and in June of 1984, Dorothy and Henry retired and moved back to Virginia to their home they bought on Buckner Road. They were very active upon returning home to Mount Garland. She is the oldest member and MOTHER of the Church and attended regularly until her health began to fail.

Dottie's favorite color was pink. She loved to sew, embroidery and crochet. She was an excellent cook and made many, many pound cakes, glazed icing cakes, lemon meringue pies and the best golden brown fried chicken you ever tasted.

Dottie was a resident of the Assisted Living Country Side in Orange, Virginia for five months and then moved to the Assisted Living Riverdale, Charlottesville, VA where she resided for two years. She finally came back home in June of 2009 where she had great caretakers in her home. Among them were Sharon Johnson (Dottie called her Gwen), Rachel Gregory, Annette Houchens, and her niece, Jacqueline Thornton (often referred to as "the girl") who took superb care of her for one year and two weeks.

Dottie departed this life peacefully at the age of 96, on Saturday, September 25, 2010 at 9:25 PM, at the Hospice House in Charlottesville, VA. She departed this life, but joined her beloved husband Henry Lee Myles, Sr., who departed this life on October 8, 1993.

Dorothy had seven sisters and three brothers who preceded her in death, Henrietta (1929), Angie (1960), Minnie (1976), Thelma (1984), Annie Bell (2000), Louise (2000), Elizabeth (2008), Baby Hughes (1918), Willie (1974), and John (2000.)

Although Dottie had no children, she leaves to cherish her memories, four sisters, Florence Cheatham of Chesterfield, VA, Margaret Davis of Philadelphia, PA, Frances (Fannie) Johnson of Buckner, VA and devoted sister Alma Mason of Louisa, VA; one sister-n-law, Katherine Myles of NC; eight nieces, twelve nephews, and many, many cousins and devoted friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 PM on Saturday, October 2, 2010 at Mount Garland Baptist Church, 4000 Buckner Road, Bumpass, VA 23024. The Reverend Floyd Roane will be officiating and interment will follow in the church cemetery.
