A time to be born…
Deaconess Dorothy Ophelia Cosby Harris was the youngest of three children, born on January 12, 1925, in Louisa, Virginia. She and her siblings were adopted by the late Charlie and Jessie Cosby. Her sister, Annie Banner preceded her in death.
A time to build…
Her early education was obtained in Louisa County. After her children started school Dorothy obtained as a professional domestic worker for several of the doctors and lawyers in the county. She spent her last 20 years of employment at the Louisa Manufacturing Company. Highly respected by young and old. She was affectionately known as "Dot."
A time to love…
She was united in Holy Matrimony to the love of her life, Harry Lewis Harris for 63 years. Harry loved to tell the story of how he saw her ushering at a local church and it was love at first sight. They dated while he served in the military and got married upon his return home. Their union was blessed with two loving children, Harry Jr. who preceded her death and their daughter, Gloria.
A time to serve God…
At an early age, Dorothy gave her life to Christ, and was baptized at Mt. Hope Baptist Church, Bumpass, Virginia, and later joined her faithful husband at the Ebenezer Baptist Church where she served as one of the first ordained Deaconesses, a member of the Usher Board, and the Missionary Society. She served as an officer in many of the auxiliaries. Dorothy loved to sing and utilized her talent as a long time faithful member of the Sanctuary Choir and the A.L. Carter Singers.
A time to serve her Community…
She was a faithful member of the Eastern Star, Rebecca Chapter #124 where she served as Warder for many years until her health failed. Dorothy was also a long time member of the Louisa Federated Women's Club and the local NAACP Chapter. She was widely known for the loving smile and encouragement she offered to everyone.
A time to unwind…
She loved to stay busy and entertain guests. She spent many hours in her kitchen preparing delicious meals, all made with the love that she always displayed from her heart.
A time to die…
After many years of being the caregiver for her husband and her own illness, God called her home for sweet rest on June 14, 2010.
A time to weep…
Dorothy leaves to cherish her memory, a loving daughter, Evangelist Gloria Yates; a brother, Deacon James Cosby and wife, Reverend Mary Cosby, five grandchildren, Elder Cordell Yates and wife, Devin (Ashburn, VA), Shonda Harris-Muhammed, and husband, Demetrius (Richmond, VA), Shelia Phillips, and husband, Tory (Richmond, VA), William Coleman, and wife, Denise (Norfolk, VA), Clifford Ruffin, and wife, Cynthia (Alexandria, VA); nine great-grandchildren; an aunt, Bessie Marrow and husband Eddie; three devoted God-daughters, Barbara Dandridge, Darryl Holt, and Gladys Thomas; and a devoted friend Thelma Burruss, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
The family will receive friends on Friday, Jnne 18, 2010 from 7-8 p.m. in the Thomasson Watson Funeral Chapel. Funeral services, conducted by Evangelist Gloria H. Yates, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 19,2010 at Ebenezer Baptist Church 864 Pendleton Road Mineral, VA 23117. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
