Deacon Dorothy Elizabeth Lee Chavious of Louisa, Virginia, received her heavenly wings on Friday, June 12, 2020.  At the age of 95 and in the presence of family and friends she went to rest in the loving arms of our Lord.

Deacon Chavious was born in Salem, Virginia April 28, 1925 to the late Dewey M. and Dorothy Anderson Lee.  She was the first of six children.  At the age of 12, she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized by Reverend C. J. Smith and joined the First Baptist Church in Salem, Virginia.

She received her early education in the Roanoke County School District.  She attended Roanoke County Training School and graduated at the age of 18 from Carver High School in 1942.  At the age of 19, she left home and moved to Washington, DC to work for the United States Government.  She was employed by the Civil Service Commission, the Naval Department, the Department of Interior TAGO-Pentagon and the Ballistic Missile Defense Program Office.  In 1981, she retired from the Government with 35 years of service and moved to Louisa, Virginia.

Deacon Chavious was married on May 20, 1950 to the late Walter William Chavious.  To this union was born one son, Michael William Chavious.  In September 1972, Deacon Chavious was blessed with Desireé at four months old.  She was given to her by her great niece, whom she loved and raised as her own daughter.

In June 1988, she joined Bright Hope Baptist Church.  During that time, she served in many capacities.  She sang on the Senior Choir and served on the Missions Ministry, Pulpit Ministry, Jail & Prison Ministry, Deaconess Ministry and Deacon Ministry.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Dewey Mac Lee, Jr. and James Leroy Lee and one sister, Sadie Alfreda Lee.  She leaves to cherish her memories a son, Michael W. Chavious and daughter, Desireé S. Graham, both of Louisa, Virginia; two brothers, Gilbert C. Lee of Maryland and Howard C. Lee of Hawaii; sister-in-law, Josephine Lee of Maryland; grandsons, Michael Chavious, Jr. and Joshua James, both of Louisa, Virginia; granddaughter, Monet Chavious; a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, special friends, Gloria Hill, Lawanda Quarles and Amanda Quarles; and a host of many loving and caring friends.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, June 18, 2020 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at The Sun Chapel, D. D. Watson Mortician, 117 West Street, Louisa, Virginia. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 19, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. in The Sun Chapel at D. D. Watson, Louisa. Interment will follow in the Bright Hope Baptist Church Cemetery.
