Dorothy Ethel Quarles Bishop, sweetly nicknamed Dot, passed away on December 3, 2013, at the age of 80 in Princes Georges County, Maryland.

Dot was born on April 22, 1933, to the union of James and Ethel Quarles in Louisa, Virginia. One of nine children, Dot was raised in Louisa where her parents provided a loving and deeply religious home. Dot had a strong faith and accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Louisa, where she worked diligently as a steward of the Lord, serving in many roles and ministries. During Dot's later years, she maintained her faithful worship at Central Baptist Church in Camp Springs, Maryland.

Dot was educated in the Louisa County School system and attended Louisa Training School and cosmetology school. It was the latter educational experience that fueled her ambition to become a beautician and entrepreneur. Dot resided in Washington, DC for over 40 years, and during that time she was a popular and highly successful stylist at Shadyside Beauty Salon, where she developed many special friendships. Dot also achieved great success as a franchise business owner of Avon cosmetics and Watkins home products.

As a strong and independent woman, Dot built a loving and nurturing home for her two children. She loved and cherished her family and friends dearly. People enjoyed talking to Dot – young or old. She was a genuine person with a magnetic personality – always fun to be around and welcoming. Those who know Dot well admired her and took pleasure in her candid comments and pointed wit.

Before becoming ill, Dot enjoyed attending church services and events, participating in community activities, and collecting antiques. Dot also loved to cook, bake, watch westerns, and entertain family and friends, especially during holidays. When Dot's health began to fail, her son Junior became her faithful caregiver, devoting his days to lovingly caring and supporting his mother. As he would often remark, Dot was a vision to behold, always impeccably dressed with an equally beautiful smile. She was one-of-a-kind, a truly phenomenal woman. Dot bequeaths a tremendous legacy of greatness to uphold.

Dot is preceded in death by her parents, James and Ethel Quarles and her sister, Juanita. Dot's life and memories are survived and cherished by her devoted and loving son, Floyd E. Bishop, Jr. (Junior) and beloved daughter Phyllis Rogers, and their caring spouses Virginia Ragland Bishop and Aaron Rogers, Sr.; her loving grandchildren, Kandi, Shawna, Aaron Jr., Jared, Mary, Demaris, Anna, and their caring spouses; her beloved great grandchildren, Jillian, Nicolas, and Jonathan, and other dear great grandchildren; her beloved siblings, Louise Russell (Philadelphia, PA), William King and wife Lillie (Brockton, MA), Emma Jean Jones (Philadelphia, PA), James B. Quarles and Yvonne (Washington, DC), Michael Quarles (Oxon Hill, MD), Patricia Day (Temple Hills, MD), and Barbara Reed (Fort Washington, MD); her devoted friends, Kenneth Ragland and Pearl Mansfield; and a host of loving cousins, nieces, nephews, family members, friends, and fellow church members.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at noon at First Baptist Church with Reverend Bruce Jones officiating and Reverend Larry Holt, eulogist. Interment will follow the service in the church cemetery.
