Remembering Momma, Mom, Mother, Granny, GG, Grandmother, Auntie, Doll
"God saw the road was getting rough,
The hills were hard to climb.
He gently closed your loving eyes
And whispered, Peace be thine."
On Sunday, February 16, 2025 our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, sent an angel to escort our beloved Mother, Sister Doris Elaine Day Yates home.
Doris Elaine Day Yates, fondly known as Momma, Granny, Doll, Doris Day, Auntie, and Aunt Doris, completed her earthly journey on February 16, 2025, and transitioned to her heavenly home. Doris was born on July 28, 1927, in Charleston, West Virginia, to loving parents, Henry and Jeanette Day. She spent her early years in Hansford, WV. After marrying Philip Harris Yates, Sr., on February 21, 1952, she moved to Troy Virginia with her husband. Doris resided in the Troy and Milton VA area for over 70 years, creating unforgettable memories and cultivating lasting relationships.
Doris was a woman of many talents, and her hobbies were as diverse as her personality. She was an avid BINGO player and loved playing Po-Ke-No and Pitty Pat. When her eyes were still strong, Doris loved putting together puzzles and solving word searches. But above all, she was a dedicated mother and grandmother, raising her five children, her grandchildren, and other family members with immense love and care. Her quiet spirit and old school beliefs guided her life, and her faith in the Lord Jesus Christ was deeply rooted. She was a baptized believer of the Baptist faith, and in her younger years, she served as an usher in the church. The verse from Proverbs 31:28, "Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her," beautifully illustrates Doris's life.
Doris is survived by her children, Alfred (Amy) Yates, of Charlottesville, VA, Shirley Yates, of Upper Marlboro, MD, Donna Cooper of Troy, VA. and Gary (Rachel) Yates of Milton, VA. Her grandchildren are William Yates, Kimberly Yates, Alfred Yates, Jr., Phillip Banks, Tiffany Yates, Christopher Yates, Jolysa White, Olivia Yates, and Isaac Yates. Her legacy continues to shine through her great-grandchildren, Sierra, Cedasia, Octavia, Liyani, and Ashton, and three great-great grandchildren, Isabella, Alexander and Giovanni. Doris is also survived by her brother, Charles Day and his wife Donna of Cleveland, OH., and two sisters-in-law who became like sisters: Mildred Strother and Martha Yates, both of Charlottesville, VA, one faithful niece, who was more like a daughter, Joyce Day Brown, of Hansford, WV., along with a host of nieces, nephews.
Doris was preceded in death by her loving husband, Phillip Harris Yates, Sr., her son Phillip Harris Yates, Jr., her parents Henry and Jeanette Day, her brothers Alfred and Howell Day, and her sisters Gertrude Minor and Roberta Day.
Doris's life was a testament to the power of love, faith, and family. Her memory will forever be cherished by those who knew and loved her. As we celebrate the life of Doris Elaine Day Yates, we remember her not just for the love she gave but also for the lives she touched with her gentle spirit.
